Because squares are always positive.

i2 = -1

02 = 0, a non-negative number, but not positive

REAL squares are always NON-NEGATIVE

In this case you have already defined 'd' and 'f' as real, so it isn't a problem, but this isn't technically a correct statement. You claim to be a math professor, so I'm going to expect you to be technically accurate
