Stephen Hawking, but that ship has long since sailed.

He was a fruit. Like a tomato.

He wasn't a vegetable.
He's pushing up daisies now.

[–]jet199[S] 5 insightful - 5 fun5 insightful - 4 fun6 insightful - 5 fun -  (3 children)

I mean it's a 15 inch long white thing. Hard to miss.

I did a pickle with that and carrot. Unremarkable.

So is a parsnip!

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 4 fun4 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

Well you're not wrong 🤷

Parsnip is pointy, daikon is oblong

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 3 fun -  (18 children)

Okra.

[–][deleted] 7 insightful - 4 fun7 insightful - 3 fun8 insightful - 4 fun -  (4 children)

Screw these haters, fried okra is good, and it's necessary for gumbo.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

I would like to try it. Hell, I'm going to add it to my next week's shopping list 👍

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Definitely eat it raw, and chew it up a bunch in your mouth - it's best that way.

😮

You're not missing much.

One of the best curries I've ever had was okra and lamb off a stall on Green Street.

[–]Airbus320 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Lamb is pretty good with anything. How does wood pigeon taste like?

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Pigeon is delicious.

[–]jet199[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Between duck and chicken but drier.

Okra is ubiquitous where I live.

[–]Airbus320 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

So slimy, yuck

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 4 fun3 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 4 fun -  (1 child)

Eat the slime, Airbus

[–]Airbus320 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I did it once or twice, tastes bland

[–]Alphix 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

It gets slimy when overcooked. When cooked just to perfection, it's... Meh. Edible.

[–]jet199[S] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

It's good for thickening a stew instead of adding flour.

[–]Airbus320 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Good idea for going gluten free

[–][deleted] 5 insightful - 4 fun5 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 4 fun -  (3 children)

Salsify

[–]Alphix 4 insightful - 5 fun4 insightful - 4 fun5 insightful - 5 fun -  (0 children)

That's an unsalsifyable assertion.

Asparagus is a wonder superfood. It heals the kidneys!

    [–]Airbus320 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Isn't kidney damage irreversible? The small tubes i mean

    [–]Alphix 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

    NOTHING is irreversible.

    [–]jet199[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Wait until you see it growing.

    Stinking corpse lily salad.

    [–]JasonCarswell 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

I'd say rhubarb, but I think I once had some of a rhubarb pie. Really, I just want to say rutabaga because it sounds funny, but I might have had that too at some point. How would I know what I haven't tried if I don't even know what exists beyond my knowledge and experience - especially if I don't bother to pay attention?

Seaweed salad like they serve in Japanese restaurants is fucking delicious. I think you can buy it dried and make it yourself.

      [–]jet199[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I've had seaweed in japanesd food but not laverbread.

Those that are not looking good and familiar to me. Someday, I will try some more. And have some more in my meal rotation.

      [–][deleted] 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

I always figured this was the green stuff in takeaway chow mein.

      [–]Alphix 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (2 children)

It doesn't have the methane creating properties of other lady leafy greens.

      [–]Alphix 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Methane is not an issue, but yeah the WEF says it is...

If you have eaten Chinese food you will have had it. They sneak it in.

I substituted that for cauliflower in a curry a few weeks ago and it tasted exactly the same.

        [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (6 children)

I pretty much eat all vegetables. But I’m sure there’s lots of stuff I haven’t tried.

Off the top of my head, I know there’s lots of fruits I haven’t tried. Like a red lychee in Australia.

I dunno, if you go to your local lotto mart, you can get lots of stuff not in the normal grocery store.

        [–][deleted] 4 insightful - 5 fun4 insightful - 4 fun5 insightful - 5 fun -  (3 children)

Lychee is delicious, although when you take the skin off they kind of resemble eyeballs. If you like eyeballs, you'll like lychee.

        [–][deleted] 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

        Sweet juicy eyeballs.

        I love these:

Used to get them all the time in NYC 20+ years ago.

Rambutans are similar to lychee, if you can find those.

        [–]Airbus320 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

They taste as good as lychee

        Jackal plant.

        [–]Airbus320 1 insightful - 3 fun1 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 3 fun -  (3 children)

Maybe when they are too ripe and fibery

Mushrooms. Not as a "vegetable" so far.
