I agree, it's reaching maximum saturation, and that is waking a lot of people up.

Also remember there's a lot of young people too. Like 25% of the world's population is under 15 years old, so for a lot of people this stuff is just beginning to click because they're just being exposed to it for the first time. So be patient, people are waking up. Just keep trying to help that along, it's all we can really do.

How about we start small and add a blurb to that one listing only about how you should click 'mute sub' if you are seeing too much of a sub you don't care about?

Okay that sounds like a great and easy solution. I'd be 100% down for that. Just right above the first listing or something. Not sure the best way to accomplish though in the code though.

I don't mind them being on the subs page, the goal would not be to disappear them if we changed things. If we made the change, the goal would simply be to make /new more usable so we then get a better front page, instead of scaring everyone away from /new lol. But I can see the merit to leaving it as-is too, I honestly don't mind either way. Totally up to you.

Agreed, the media is a pied piper (5 companies owning 95% all US media) trying to culturally engineer divides so that those in power can remain in power over the coming decades. And those in power are paying the media to do this, I would bet anything.

We can't out-bid the billionaires, and our government isn't going to keep the media in check because it's also owned by those same billionaires.

So the only solution that remains is that we have to collectively stop falling for the bullshit, and to help each other not fall for the bullshit.

I know, it's literally nonsensical.

Although I have to give a shout out to Oklahoma, they added a state-mandated high-school course in household finances, to cover stuff like balancing a checkbook and paying bills. So that's cool of Oklahoma to be ahead of the curve like that. But this type of thing should be way more common. The disconnect between what's taught in school and what's needed in life, is far too large

I think "whites using hate speech" is not a counter, but is the exact reaction the people in charge are trying to create.

They want divide and conquer. And if they can get all the races openly hating each other, then they win. Don't give them the satisfaction.

I'm not saying be weak or defenseless. Not at all. But if your reaction is to just sink to their level and start throwing insults too, then that's just falling in to the trap that's been engineered for people, imo. Then it's just a short step to civil war, and then the military-industrial complex is back in control.

The media is playing games with people's minds, to try and rile them up in to a reaction that is controlled by those who have a monopoly on violence. Typical media. Typical divide-and-conquer tactics. It's easier to just sidestep that entirely and build something better.

It is indoctrination. It's literally obedience training. It's based off the Prussian Schooling Model, which was designed to create military obedience, after Prussia lost the Battle of Jena in 1806 because of poor obedience. America then re-tooled this successful Prussian Schooling Model to the industrial era, to create obedient workers. And that's literally the school system we have today. Any learning that occurs is strictly incidental, and I don't mean that in a joking way. They want the people smart enough to run the machines, but not smart enough to question the increasingly shittier conditions they're forced to endure.

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There's more emotional awareness than ever, but less emotional intelligence. People are taught to expose all their emotions openly (which is generally good) but then aren't taught how to improve those responses and learn from their emotional mistakes. A lot of people see emotions as some immutable paragon of truth, and any emotion that is felt identifies the true character of that moment. So rather than leaning on rationality, they lean on emotional responses, and then they become intellectually-stunted adults who can't properly process their own emotions, much less the emotions of others.

Just realize that the internet now has the most youngest people the internet has ever had. These youtubers you mention are famous in the 8-14 year old demographic. That's literally their audience, and how they got the views that gave them ad revenue. So much of the internet is being re-organized around the behavior of children, because they are easy to influence and a child's pageload looks just the same to the advertising agencies as any other internet traffic.

But I think we're seeing this trend peak, but it's still got some mileage left in it.

Then add on top of that all the propaganda, and special interest groups, and astroturfing... and you get the internet we see today.

But for us people who remember how the internet used to be 10 years ago or more... it leaves a sour taste.

That's part of why saidit exists. Trying to re-establish some maturity, logic, and sensibility in to internet culture again. Instead of letting it all get overwhelmed by literal childish nonsense.

This is one thing I've wanted to develop from the start, but it's hard. I'd love it if one post could be posted to like 10 subs, appear only once in the feed, and have a singular shared comment section. That'd be great, but it's like a 30 hour project at least. But if someone made it work with our code we would certainly integrate it in to the codebase!

No, we're using their open source from 2015 and have followed all the appropriate requirements to use it.

It'd be a different thing if we were still trying to use the name 'reddit' or the snoo logo, but we're careful not to do that.

They can get new fake email addresses just as easily as they can create new saidit accounts... so I don't see how that would help anything. And in fact would also deter many legit users.

Spez (Huffman) wrote the original LISP version of reddit.

From wikipedia:

During spring break of his senior year at UVA, Huffman and college roommate Alexis Ohanian[1] drove to Boston, Massachusetts, to attend a lecture[6] delivered by programmer-entrepreneur Paul Graham.[1][7] Huffman and Ohanian talked with Graham after the lecture and he invited them to apply to his startup incubator Y Combinator.[1] Huffman came up with their original idea, My Mobile Menu,[7] which was intended to allow users to order food by SMS.[1][7] The idea was rejected, but Graham asked Huffman and Ohanian to meet him in Boston to pitch another idea for a start-up; it was at this brainstorming session that the idea for what Graham called the "front page of the Internet" was created.[1] Huffman and Ohanian were accepted in Y Combinator's first class.[1][7] Huffman coded the entire site in Lisp.[8][9] He and Ohanian launched Reddit in June 2005, funded by Y Combinator.[5][10]

The site’s audience grew rapidly in its first few months, and by August 2005, Huffman noticed their habitual user-base had grown so large that he no longer needed to fill the front page with content himself.[8][11][12] At 23, Huffman and Ohanian sold Reddit to Condé Nast on October 31, 2006, for a reported $10 million to $20 million.[1][13] Huffman remained with Reddit until 2009, when he left his role as acting CEO.

Swarz came around in "fall 2005"

In early fall of 2005, Swartz worked with his fellow co-founders of another nascent Y-Combinator firm Reddit, to rewrite Reddit's Lisp codebase using Python and web.py

So according to that, it was launched in LISP in June 2005 and then Swartz re-wrote the whole thing in python in early fall 2005. So it sounds like reddit's LISP version was only operational for a couple of months in total! So basically the entirety of it's existence is from Swartz's code

By some estimates like highest vote count on a post, we could say 3x or maybe even 5x. But I'm just talking bare traffic for the 1.5x-2x. Also there's always the question of how long the increased activity will stick around for, so I'm interested to see that as well. That sounds like a nice feel. Thanks for telling me about your firsthand experience with it.

Speaking of multi-key combinations... I once looked in to learning how to use a stenographer keyboard, which can do like 250 wpm (it's what they use in courtrooms and for tv closed captioning). I'm still kind of half-considering it. I watched a talk about a programmer who added programming functions as multi-key combinations as well, so they could code very fast. (I found the talk! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wpv-Qb-dB6g )

Steno is a "chord" based system, where you hit like 5 keys at once, and basically type whole words simultaneously rather than letter-by-letter: https://www.huseby.com/blog/2019/court-reporting-more-than-just-typing-fast

But I guess it involves a lot of shorthand as well, so it needs an interpretation system to make it back in to full English. But I guess this is already solved with real-time closed captioning, so it seems like it should be doable on a computer too... anyways I always thought that would be a cool thing to try, going even beyond Dvorak.

Yes the limits on government don't seem to mean much when corporations run most everything. I'd like to see anti-monopoly and anti-trust laws actually be enforced again.

And to see actual meaningful limitations on the revolving door between regulatory agencies and the industries they're supposed to limit. But how can we pass the laws when the lobbying structure and congresspeople are all basically in the pockets of these big money corporate interests? It's a frustrating situation for the American people to be in.

[–]magnora7 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I am to understand that's not actually typical

That's the exact reason I never learned it. I can do 100-120 wpm on a qwerty so the idea of doing 140-150 wpm on dvorak was very enticing. But the inability to switch was just a deal-killer, especially when I was in college and working in an office and using lots of different computers.

Did you notice wpm speed gains from switching?
