That is an extremely reductive definition of stoicism. That is the Alcoholics Anonymous mantra, not an accurate description of Greek stoic school of philosophy

Stoicism in Greece came about once theirs culture was in decline so the opportunity for greatness seemed out of reach. The first cope.

The rest of it is just "worship the matrix".

It's one of the best philosophies out there. I'm creating a new one based on it that I call "Marcelism:"

No, it's essentially matrix worship. It's useful for making life more tolerable, but it's a lie. And it seems like one that would keep you here longer rather than help you leave.

Aurelius' was a cuckold and was being made fun of by the entire empire while his wife was fucking a gladiator. Puts the whole thing in perspective.

So it's about acceptance? I don't see anything wrong with that.

Accepting things like that is impossible. Those who say they have are only lying to themselves. It's not useless because it does make things more tolerable, but it's still a lie.

why though? it seems very buddhist?

[–]Vulptex[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Buddhists are also coping. The world is the problem.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Buddhists frequently riot and turn to violence, I'm not sure I'd call that coping.

Plus, just accepting things is subverting you to the matrix

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

This is an interesting answer. Much to think about.

Don't fall for the new age toxic positivity pantheism either. "Bad doesn't really exist," which is exactly what Stoicism says.

I do tend to believe that the absolute truth does not exist. Especially from a scientific perspective. I can measure something and get a different measurement each time. For example.

They mean everything is good somehow.

Can you see from this that for a usurpation-free existence: the sky is the limit?

In a nutshell: we are the company we keep

The final panel in this depiction sums up what it means to
"Focus on the things you can control and accept what you can't."

Batman is stoic, he kicks ass!

"Focus on the things you can control and accept what you can't."

Things you can control:

the paradigm/mindset you view everything through
- the Golden Rule > the corporate, top-down hierarchical🔺paradigm
See also the reinforced / enhanced Golden Rule, imagined pictorially

the thoughts you think about
- Paradiso @ Heaven on Earth > Inferno @ Hell on Earth

the habits you engage in
- accretive dialogue > idle chatter

the systems you use
- direct systems > indirect systems

the economy you sustain
- 99%-controlled economy > 1%-controlled economy

whom you pledge allegiance to daily
- co-operatives > corporations

the destination you set for:
- usurper-free Dom > rabbitholes

You are the company you keep

Heaven can't exist on earth. Even what looks like Heaven is actually Hell in disguise.

[–]EddieC 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

How would you know what heaven looks like?

Also, 'heaven on earth' and 'hell on earth' are both expressions of different living conditions on earth
- Where/how you are living - drab as it maybe to you - could be described as 'heaven on earth' by others who are in dire straits

Making our condition all the more horrifying

[–]EddieC 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

"Horrifying"?

Nevertheless, the table at the top needs to be updated wrt "things you can control'
