I agree. I used to browse /r/all all the time, but now it's just untenable. There are a handful of good subreddits left, and if you only read those it can be OK, but man you're right it's 99% garbage. I feel like I'm conversing with a crowd of children when I use that site. Every once in a blue moon you have a logical discussion with someone, but it's definitely the exception rather than the rule on reddit these days.

I see your account is 2 hours old, so welcome to saidit! Here's some more stuff about the site if you want to learn more about how saidit works and how it differs from reddit: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/

I think we should just leave it behind and let the site naturally grow. Perhaps a /r/meanwhile onsaidit instead?

Someone should make a bot that reposts all content from there to saidit.

Most of the posts on reddit are fine. You can already find every single thing that has been posted on saidit on reddit too. It's the culture that sucks, created by toxic people not unlike you. Give me the content, but fuck that culture of groupthink and censorship.

That's not true at all, except the part about me being "toxic people" and reddit sucking ass.

        [–]magnora7 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

/u/magnora7, would you be opposed to a bot that looks at the top posts from /r/all (excluding nsfw posts) in a fixed interval and posts them to a dedicated sub?

No that'd be fine, but we might take it off the front page because it'd cause a lot of duplicates to end up appearing.

        [–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Please respect the pyramid of debate when on saidit. https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/j1/the_saiditnet_terms_and_content_policy/

        First warning.

You've already warned me at least once before. Don't lose count.

I'd like it if it was a bot account and if you add it as a mod or something it allowed you to repost from your subs reddit counterpart that way if you do own both the Subreddit and the Sub you can share the content to here and or if the Reddit counter part of your sub isn't to toxic/stupid you can forward it, that bot would be a good idea in some cases.

        [–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

        Thanks for the welcome!

I agree that there are some good subreddits left. What initially brought me to reddit was a place to gather with people with similar niche interests, and the problem solving community surrounding the specific interest. Hopefully saidit can replace reddit in that way, someday.

I also agree with you on the children part. No sense commenting on anything that’s close to the front page unless you have a good joke.

        I’ll check out that link!

That and Linux gaming subreddit. Literally just the gaming sub, but everyone installs Manjaro or some shit

Even my favorite sports sites have all become enforced echo chambers whereas 4 years ago argumentation was actively encouraged and understand to be a positive part about interacting.

        [–]magnora7 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

That's very well said. Argumentation used to be a benefit, not a downside. But people also kept it more civil back then. Probably because there are more young and less intelligent people online now.

        [–]sodasplash 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

This is why I’m not all that opposed to getting rid of net neutrality. I want my 2006 internet back dammit! /s

        [–]blind_sypher88 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I think it might be a bot system thats actively engineering the entire site to be nothing but fake positivity. You used to be able to have actual discussions with people 5-8 years ago but now its a intellectual wasteland, and if you're critical of anyone or anything your swamped with yikes posting and downvotes. Thats not even getting into the seemingly automated reply sets that each and every post gets. Its pure unadultered cancer at this point.

        [–]sodasplash 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The biggest mistake we made back when reddit was good, was trying to get all of our friends onto it because it was an awesome place. They ruined it.

        [–]compultantuser 9 insightful - 3 fun9 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 3 fun -  (3 children)

        The 2016 election ruined it.

        [–]RedditDrownsInShit 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I mean 2016 is when reddit became outright potato-level retarded but imo it peaked in 2008. That was when I felt like I could actually learn shit there.

        [–]SuperConductiveRabbi 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Ditto. The entire site was pretty usable in 2008. But it also had a few years of good content. For me the near-total ruination was when they hired Ellen Pao and used it as an excuse to censor the fuck out of the site. After that it was downhill, with lots of bumps along the way.

        [–]PaigeAP 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

        2016 ruined everything.

        [–]send_nasty_stuff 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Sounds like how Facebook was ruined.

        [–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I used to be a huge Facebook user. I was part of the the turning point. It stopped being about posting on each others walls and more about getting likes approx. seven years ago and it never went back.

This was part of a major shift in internet culture. I remember seeing people attaching themselves to the 2012 apocalypse in any way that they could. That was the start of a new beginning.

        [–]sodasplash 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

Honestly, FB was never as cool as MySpace. MySpace was an awesome dating/hookup site around 2006.

        [–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

myspace had a blog/journal type section that I remember a lot of people actually using, was cool to see people's actual thoughts, fb I guess they could do that but no one uses it for that just to share memes, not hteir own thoughts anyway, and young people all left it too to go to things like instagram, twitter, etc that also don't work for long posts. Dumbing down. These kind of message board sites like this and reddit are dying for similar reasons.

        [–]anorganicbear 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

If you post your thoughts on facebook only about 10% of your friends will actually see your post unless you paid to advertise it.

        [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

the truth is, on fb, I have a lot of friends that post annoying stuff, so I have them on unfollow. I have one friend that posts interesting things, memes, news about shows coming up I like to see, and I always see her stuff so that works. Other than that I just use fb for groups with people I don't know in them posting pics and news about musicians I like. It's fun but impersonal.

        [–]Afor 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Wait, a friend invited ME to reddit...

        [–]RedditDrownsInShit 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

        Well then :I

        [–]send_nasty_stuff 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yup. I saw all those issues you mention frequently. I'll add a few more. Seems like weak jokes get up voted more than useful comments. I'd have to get past 10 or 15 tired old reddit inside jokes before I got down to actually content. Another pet peeve is are the power users that are obviously paid accounts constantly gaming the voting system and dominating threads. Then there were users that simply copied top comments from other threads.

        [–]sodasplash 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There’s so many threads that just get hijacked into inside jokes and people saying “I know that joke” and then someone else telling the other person how awesome they are for knowing the joke.

        [–]sodasplash 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Dude, I was banned from /r/history for pointing out that there’s an excellent and well researched book that says China discovered America in 1421.

There’s actual, MASSIVE historical evidence that China discovered America in 1421. The book is called 1421: The Year China Discovered America by Gavin Menzies.

        A) It’s ludicrously inane to perms ban someone simply for pointing out that there’s a book on a topic and

        B) It shows how deeply toxic the entitled group think is there that everyone must bow to the POV of the mods. It’s at once immature and evil.

I really wish I could truly quit that site. All it does is piss me off every time I go there.

        [–]roc 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Most historians agree that book is a few interesting arguments with mostly bullshit. But you shouldn't have been banned for just mentioning it.

        [–]sodasplash 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I’ve read a few of those arguments and they all seem rather strained and under the surface to boil down to “we don’t really know.” The more widely acknowledged points that “strangely accurate pre-Columbian maps of parts of the Atlantic exist, as well as the biological evidence of pre-Columbian Old and New World contacts” seem like especially strong points to hang one’s hat on, given that the Western world cares much more for history than China.

I’ll have to try 1434: The Year a Magnificent Chinese Fleet Sailed to Italy and Ignited the Renaissance by Menzies next.

This sort of idea that we should simply conclude on the side of “500 years of (Western) history” in the face of newer evidence when the West never has had (and still doesn’t have) access to much of what input China might offer on the subject is misplaced to me. But I’ve always argued against the acceptance of a single narrative, which happens to be your, my, and most people’s major issue with what reddit has become today.

        [–][deleted] 4 insightful - 4 fun4 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

I don’t wish to debate, I only want to reiterate what I’ve read on reddit before: being a subreddit moderator is the smallest amount of power I’ve ever seen go to someone’s head.

        [–]thomyorke 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Their censorship has driven me away, yet I keep coming back to find myself livid again and again. The worst part for me is that even the least likely subreddits would have the tightest control- just one bad moderator will remove your discussion privileges.

I recall being in subreddit dedicated to a band, I'd made a post reflecting on the toxic community and horrid fanbase downvoting any opinions / political views against those of the band's singer. It seemed as though you couldn't listen to the music without subscribing to their politics, according to the groupthink. Of course, I was quickly silenced and warned by the mod that I'd be banned if I "kept it up".

Basically, Reddit admins and bad moderators can all go fuck themselves with a ten-foot pole. Sometimes I want to quit using social media altogether, but I'm afraid I couldn't at this point. Fear of missing out? I don't know.

        [–][deleted] 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

There seems to have been a massive influx of children that like to larp as adults. Then there’s the actual adults that act like children.

        You nailed it.

The biggest problem with reddit for me is the fact that how predictable the 'flow of conversation' is, at least in the main subs.

It's like, YOU KNOW BEFOREHAND, that certain positions will be defended and certain positions will be attached. There will be a few who'll be making low grade puns that are really not funny.

It's incredibly predictable. That makes reddit unbearable for me. Fuck reddit and fuck the censorship.

        [–]poestal 2 insightful - 6 fun2 insightful - 5 fun3 insightful - 6 fun -  (0 children)

Anne frankly, I did nazi that coming. I literally came here to say this but boy, that escalated quickly so to the top with you! Lost it at 'This is why we can't have nice things' and then my faith in humanity was restored, my mind blown, as a 220 Lb. bearded man manly tears were shed. Well said. As a 'murican, I can confirm this gem has just won the internet and is doing it right. Just sayin', I know that feel, bro, and while that was a risky click, this post was a 9/10, 11/10 with rice, would read again. I see what you did there and it feels good man. You're doing God's work, son. I laughed way harder than I should have at your list that seems legit and totally nailed it. You - I like you. You magnificent bastard; you, sir, are so brave, a gentleman and a scholar, I love your doggo, pupper and murder floof, and seeing how you are a redditor for 4 years, this checks out, so I'll allow it. I regret that I only have one upvote to give for this cool story, bro. CTRL+F "about tree fiddy" was not disappointed. Wait, why do I have you tagged as "NOPE NOPE NOPE"? Nice try, you monster. You are now banned from /r/pyongyang YIKES sweety, What did I just read? Dafuq? I read that as "YOU HAD ONE JOB". I can't fap to this. No true scotsman could see that this relevant XKCD was bad, orange man bad, and you should feel bad. You must be new to reddit, so I'll see your cakeday and raise you a karma train. One does not simply rustle my jimmies, harambe not even once. Jet fuel can't melt dank memes, that stahp gave me cancer for science, that's enough internet for me today. OP is a fuzzy little man-peach, 2/10, would not bang. What is this I don't even know how is this wtf? Fuck Jenny. Circlejerk must be leaking. This will get buried but brace yourselves, not a person but; some men want to watch the world burn right in the feels. When you see it, they'll KILL IT WITH FIRE! But this has nothing to do with atheism. Lawyer up, delete facebook, hit the gym, and SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY, said no one ever, so you wouldn't download a strawman. /r/dadjokes. Damn onions, you scary like a BOSS. whoosh. Since rule #1 is 'be attractive', I'll just leave this here: This is my [f]irst post, be gentle. The narwhal bacons at midnight.

Edit: This blew up. RIP my inbox.

Edit2: thanks for the gold kind stranger

Welcome! I agree with you that reddit's an unmanageable mess now. 2016 felt like the turning point (after a couple of pretty big hiccups) and since then it's just become the crossroads of blatant propagandaville and childish pettiness.

I don't even go back there anymore, unless someone links to somethhing of interest. I miss the way it could sometimes be--like droves of us reading Wikileaks dumps and sharing in real time what we discovered there. It was amazing, and they fucking ruined it for real.

        [–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I myself am only a young teen but the amount of kids on reddit who just came out of nowhere (I'm guessing YouTube) ruined it. Reddit is starting to become instagram, take a look at r/teenagers, lol. I also value software freedom and from what I've seen saidit respects it's users privacy.

Then there’s the actual adults that act like children

That would be me. Seriously, I only participate actively in about 3 subs nowadays. Venturing out into the wider world of Reddit is a scary prospect nowadays.

What you need to understand is that social media companies hire psychologists to design systems to promote engagement. They make money by selling advertisements, and that's why engagement is key to their bottom line. So the karma system is used to manipulate users to that end.

Then there are all the many, many bots. And all the covert advertisements which flood the front page. And all the karma junkies who repost old shit, and copy/paste shit they didn't create themselves. And yes, all the twelve-year olds pretending to be adults for lulz.

Welcome to SaidIt. I'm still a dickhead.

I only go on social media to be a dickhead. That’s why CA was and WSB is so good.

Well done. You gotta keep fighting for good.

How does "being a dickhead" equal "fighting for good" exactly?

Because it's one of the few ways remaining to resist the oppressive groupthink which permeates social media, the Internet in general, and the mainstream media. Why do I think so? Because my opponents do not recognize my values, they will not honor any effort I make to adhere to my values. Every concession to etiquette is seen as an admission of guilt, and used to coerce submission to the will of their mob.

Fuck all that. As long as I breathe I will be me, thinking my thoughts and saying my words.

I empathize with your situation, but why do you base your behavior on what your opponents think? Not everyone you interact with online is your opponent. And letting your opponents influence your behavior so much is a loss in itself, imo

I don't. Why should I base my behavior on what they might think?

You literally just told me that's exactly what you do!

So how do you think I'm going to square the circle?

I share these same sentiments. I was actually very surprised when Bill Nye, turned out to be just an engineer with no peer reviewed papers or anything scientific to his name. Yet, if he makes a statement or farts, he is praised. Maybe I’m jealous.

        sits down, grabs lube

Even in the relatively small subreddit I help lord over, there's an unending trickle of completely insufferable morons who come in just to stir shit. It's amazing that these people feel the need to unperson Paul Joseph Watson for being as obnoxious as a human being can possibly be, but then emulate his exact obnoxious behaviors almost like cyborg clones.

I think all Internet policy should be based on the meme of the guy saying "Cyberbullying? Just stand up. Go outside." Alternatively, we could put all of these outrage mobs in a giant arena and watch them fight for their freedom.

Hi, I'm a redditor as well as a Saidit user (Saidtor I guess)

Just a few links to get you started over here.

        https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/

        https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/j1/the_saiditnet_terms_and_content_policy/

And I just want to say, yeah Reddit can be shit. I personally hate Reddit communities but I have worked to make my own Subreddits over on Reddit not like the rest of Reddit (In other words make them not assholes) I also run a few subs here which also go for the same rules and morals as my subreddits which is basically "Don't act like a normal redditor"

Is reposting that big of a deal for you guys? I thought about doing it, but I figured why repost reposts from reddit anyway.

Add to that, I try not to spam my own sub so I don't back log and clutter the main New tab.

If you guys want reposts though... Lemme know...
