Hey since you're new: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/

In the footer of the site is a lot of other great stuff.

You can spank your monkey anywhere, crank the shaft anywere on the web even or oogle boobies on facebook! It's more of a problem when people, and they do, link to clearly illegal (or borderline illegal nobody knows the origin of) It's an easy way to send the feds on someone.

And again, if you read the introduction post you'll get a clearer picture of saidit and that it's Not just a reddit clone, one of those differences is the porn rule.

Hmm maybe you forgot to read: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/ ?

Those two are in regards to my my own statements:

  1. Not what I said, not everywhere, IMHO plenty of dedicated places do excist however.
  2. That's a big issue, I don't know you, but I as Mod wouldn't like to check every porn link to see if it's even legal.

[–]Mnemonic 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (11 children)

After your edit : 'so go there instead if you're interested in that type of content.'

Is pretty clear in my view.

But i was referring more to:

We're trying to create an environment that encourages thought-provoking discussion, like how reddit used to be 5+ years ago, when Aaron Swartz was still around.

from https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/

[–]Wanga 8 insightful - 2 fun8 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 2 fun -  (10 children)

OP is correct in saying that porn subs won't interfere with/affect thought-provoking discussion on other subs.

[–]magnora7 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

OP is wrong because that stuff bleeds over in to the front page and affects the culture and the way people behave on the site. There's just no reason to have it around. It brings almost only negatives, and very few positives.

[–]Wanga 3 insightful - 4 fun3 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 4 fun -  (8 children)

very few positives

Tittays!

And the way people are chilll with each other in porn comments much moreso than political or even music/art comments

[–]magnora7 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Meh, go hang out on pornhub if that's what you really want. It already exists.

[–]Wanga 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

Can you name one kind of content SaidIt can be used for that does NOT already exist elsewhere on the web?

[–]magnora7 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

I don't want to have to moderate tons of porn, and I don't want people to be able to post illegal porn to be able to shut down saidit. Porn is one of the few pieces of content that can can be used to shut down the site. It's also everywhere for anyone who wants it so there's absolutely no shortage of it, it's probably the least shortage of any information on the internet. So we don't need it.

[–]Intuit 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Does the lack of porn negatively impact thought-provoking discussion? Would people who would leave here because of a lack of porn have contributed significantly to thought-provoking discussion? I think both are no. I have to think that some thought has gone into this barring of porn, so arguments "what's the harm", "why not eliminate all these other things as well" are last-ditch pleas.

[–]rockstarsball 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I worked at Microsoft and when I was there, free tool specifically for scanning porn submissions and flagging suspected illegal porn. I forget the name of it but I can reach out to some friends and see if they can hook you up if that's your main concern. As long as you make a reasonable effort to remove and block illegal content you wont get hassled.

[–]send_nasty_stuff 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I totally support you on this porn exclusion. How does saidit feel about 'beauty' subs? I.e. subs that just deal with aesthetically pleasing women or men. Not that I want to run one of those I'm just curious where the line is. Reddit was so hilariously evil when it banned r/whitebeauty but allowed all other racial beauty subs to keep operating.

[–]HorseMeat[S] 6 insightful - 4 fun6 insightful - 3 fun7 insightful - 4 fun -  (9 children)

You can spank the monkey anywhere, sure. But this site (according to the welcome post) aims for "thought-provoking discussion" & "fun" kinda like how Reddit was 5+ years ago. You could argue that subs like s/pics s/memes fits under fun. I would say pornography also fits under the fun category too. Reddit has had this sort-of content for 10 years. Five of those years being in the golden era.

[–]Mnemonic 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

I would say pornography also fits under the fun category too.

I would see saidit more as a Library for adults (we discus piracy to sexworker laws) but just not the images/videos (or audio for some) of porn. Do that somewhere else, you can discuss it, just not show it.

*also these are just my opinions.

[–]HorseMeat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

I would agree with you if the "Fun" catergory & subs didn't exist, but they do. Personally I don't see the issue with catering to different types of people. It's what makes the concept of subs interesting.

[–]Mnemonic 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

That's were we disagree, The catering is too much hassle (with porn) while there are all dedicated sites for it. Catering to debate and information is hard enough.

[–]HorseMeat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Actually, catering is fairly easy with subs because you get the choice whether or not to visit them. For example: Say you don't enjoy politics, it's easy enough to avoid due to the fact subs are like little communities.

[–]Mnemonic 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Catering also means verifying stuff is even legal. If you cater food, you are also responsible when it's poisoned. This is a problem for all subjects, but I hope you can see how much more difficult it is with porn than with death?

[–]HorseMeat[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

As I said in the first post, have trust in the sub moderators. I'm sure we wouldn't have WPD or SS if we didn't trust them to do their duty correctly. It works for Reddit on even the smaller subs so it would work here too. The reporting system exists for a reason.

It should also be taken into account that Saidit is currently tiny in comparison, so content management is fairly easy at this point. And even once it starts to grow, there will be more users to actively report illegal content to the sub moderators.

[–]Mnemonic 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

On the first point we are getting into a loop: read my previous posts about the nature (In my view) of saidit.

On the Second, still mods gotta see if it's legal, more users could also be coming here because porn is allowed and the community is small so illegal stuff is easy coming through (Mostly why 9000+ 4chan clones have failed and maybe 2 are around for a time worth mentioning).

[–]HorseMeat[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Loops happen sometimes. (See Brexit for example)

I'm not sure that would be true. In my experience with alternatives, people tend to have to work to find them. The ones who do find them tend to want to protect it from failing. But if what you said was true, why aren't movie nerds flocking over in mass numbers? There's quite a few illegal links in s/piracy/.

[–]bonked_or_maybe_not 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

have trust in the sub moderators

Law enforcement never will. You don't have to be guilty to lose everything you own in an investigation/trial.

You're assuming that horsemeat is man.

[–]Mnemonic 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Not to be sexist, but it is men who would complain about the lack of porn.

I think for Saidit to not end up where Reddit and Voat have, some boundaries have to be drawn. In addition to the debate pyramid, pornography is one of those boundaries set by the developers (who have not been profit driven) to help set the tone of discourse.

I support not having porn on Saidit.

It should be allowed on the grounds that the sub moderator ensures the content remains within the 18+ range.

I don't want to spend all day keeping track of this and looking at porn, or keeping track of mods who have to do this. Also there is plenty of porn elsewhere on the internet. The internet is like half porn. Saidit is fine without it. It doesn't add anything valuable to the community, and in fact detracts in many ways.

It also makes perfect sense to not allow porn because it can easily be abused as an entry point to cause federal agencies to gain access to saidit, or shut down saidit. It is a tactical decision.

There are plenty of other sites that will cater to your porn needs, but saidit is not one of them.

        [–]HorseMeat[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (16 children)

I guess, but technically they could shut down the site for a bunch of other reasons. All it takes is one popular video posted on WPD 2.0, then BOOM! I think that's why a lot of sites are cautious about violence/gore in general. It's similar to porn in that aspect.

Though I understand Saidit probably won't change its stance on this. I created the post in the off chance that I could actually influence a change.

        [–]magnora7 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (15 children)

All it takes is one popular video posted on WPD 2.0, then BOOM!

Such as? I don't think that's true at all.

Sorry the porn policy is pretty set-in-stone at this point, you are correct

The New Zealand Shooting. The government pushed hard to get that removed from as much sites as possible. Even Liveleak was forced to remove it to avoid being censored.

        [–]magnora7 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (13 children)

The government pushed hard to get that removed from as much sites as possible.

Not in the US, where our servers are. And we might soon move them to switzerland or norway or something, which is even more safe

        [–]HorseMeat[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (12 children)

Does it matter where the servers are? Governments/ISPs can sadly censor stuff without having direct access to the servers. Being blocked in certain countries is not ideal for any site.

        [–]magnora7 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

Yes it definitely matters. It's very hard for them to shut down a server in switzerland, they have very intense privacy laws and the swiss government doesn't let the US government or other governments do stuff willy-nilly to data hosted physically in their country

        [–]HorseMeat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

That's very interesting actually! That adds one more point to the list of why Switzerland is ahead of other countries.

        [–]magnora7 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

Yeah it does. It's where the elite hide all their money so it makes sense it'd have super-strict and unbreakable security laws, haha.

Also Iceland was another good alternative, they take data security seriously and you know the country is in the hands of their people because they just had a revolution to re-write their constitution in 2009. But the servers there are 5-10x as expensive as Norway and Switzerland, so it's not a competitive option unfortunately.

        [–]HorseMeat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

Switzerland it is then. I don't think you really even need to consider the alternatives if you already know you are guaranteed reliably.

        [–]hennaojisan 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (13 children)

Since you're just a click away from all the porn you can use, why not let the people who own and operate this site do it their way? Did you ever notice that there is no advertising on saidit? That is part of the policy. Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

        [–]HorseMeat[S] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (12 children)

I do let them operate in their own way. They seem perfectly okay with people expressing their opinion/suggesting stuff. Nobody is force feeding them meat down their throat.

        [–]hennaojisan 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

But as you indirectly said, some people might LIKE meat being forced down their throats. :) I used to be obsessed by watching it but have mellowed slightly. That could be said about maybe 99% of males on the Internet, right? I just read that reddit is working to get rid of adult content. You can air your innermost thoughts here and no one is going to shadowban you, unless your thoughts are pornographic.

        [–]HorseMeat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

I'm still kicking here despite my thoughts. I don't think anyone minds the discussion. It's more that they mind sampling the actual meat itself. I feel like I repeat myself far too often sometimes.

        [–]hennaojisan 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (9 children)

You're talking meta-porn so that is cool. I think your comments would have to be waaay graphic before anyone complained and it wouldn't be me. Yes, I too repeat myself again and again from time to time. The atmosphere here is so friendly but NO ONE is upvoting my submissions damn it. A bunch of headline readers. :)

        [–]HorseMeat[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

I guess I'm not good with the graphic thing. Probably the reason why I don't pick people up often. And yeah, I agree the people are friendly. Hopefully that doesn't ever change.

        [–]hennaojisan 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

I got sidetracked on Amazon. My wife, sitting right here, hit on me at the gym and we've been together 18 years though some of that time we were married to other people. I was in great shape then.

The consensus… at time of posting, appeared to be against hosting porn on Saidit. That's certainly the consensus of the admins, though, so not much will change in that regard.

        [–]noxiousnick 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I literally just found saidit about an hour ago but I support the no-porn side. If you came here from reddit, you can find a subreddit for literally any (legal) porn imaginable. There are hundreds of porn subreddits, thousands of porn websites, what real value would be added to saidit by adding even more porn? I like the mentality of "go jerk off somewhere else and come to saidit for discussions".

        [–]HopeThatHalps 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (20 children)

These style of sites are meant to be a central hub for content.

Maybe a central hub for exchange of opinions and information, not content of any sort.

You guys already allow adult content with subs like s/WatchPeopleDie

If by adult content you mean naked people dying, the fact that they are naked is not the reason why they are featured on the sub.

And remember, Reddit banning subs is part of the reason Saidit exists.

You can't be purely reactionary, though. Some subreddits should be be banned, it's not strictly a bad thing.

Lastly, if you don't want porn in your feeds, you could always implement a system similar to Reddit's r/all r/popular. It works surprisingly well.

How would you say that porn could give rise to good debate and conversation?

        [–]HorseMeat[S] 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (19 children)

Maybe a central hub for exchange of opinions and information, not content of any sort.

There's a few subs not related to either of those things. That's sort-of why I didn't think it would be such a big deal to expand the central hub.

The first impression of the site is that it's trying to be Reddit in the good old days, which surprisingly enough included more than just information & opinions. Of course, I learned today that this is not the case and that the site has other visions in mind.

If by adult content you mean naked people dying, the fact that they are naked is not the reason why they are featured on the sub.

Dying in video or image form is generally considered adult content without them being naked. The rating boards increase the age limit of media when death is clearly visible.

You can't be purely reactionary, though. Some subreddits should be be banned, it's not strictly a bad thing.

Depends on where you draw the line. I always thought it was preferable for the sub creator (sub moderator) to have full control over their community. Sure, there will be subs which have debatable views by most peoples' standards, but it's nice to let them have their place as long it's self contained within the sub.

How would you say that porn could give rise to good debate and conversation?

I'm enjoying the debate about porn right now. You can have a good conversation/debate about anything if you try hard enough.

        [–]HopeThatHalps 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (18 children)

The first impression of the site is that it's trying to be Reddit in the good old days, which surprisingly enough included more than just information & opinions.

reddit whored itself out, pretending to be social visionaries that they obviously are not, in order to beat Digg, and they succeeded, and now they are paying the price for having pulled a colossal bait and switch.

Dying in video or image form is generally considered adult content without them being naked. The rating boards increase the age limit of media when death is clearly visible.

Well the rule is "porn", and not "adult", technically.

I always thought it was preferable for the sub creator (sub moderator) to have full control over their community.

The problem with, say, a white supremecist subreddit has nothing to do with self policing. It's about the premise of the community itself.

I'm enjoying the debate about porn right now. You can have a good conversation/debate about anything if you try hard enough.

Sure, but unloading a collection of porn pics is not the same as having a debate about porn.

reddit whored itself out, pretending to be social visionaries that they obviously are not, in order to beat Digg, and they succeeded, and now they are paying the price for having pulled a colossal bait and switch.

At least you got some good years without much in terms of censorship.

Well the rule is "porn", and not "adult", technically.

Yeah okay. You could however add a twist and call it gore porn. :-p (Obviously joking here)

It has nothing to do with self policing. The problem with, say, a white supremecist subreddit has nothing to do with self policing. It's about the premise of the community itself.

The line is the biggest problem in this regard. If we were truly one for no censorship we would allow these types of subs even if we don't encourage or support them in any way.

Sure, but unloading a collection of porn pics is not the same as having a debate about porn.

Ooh! If you love the human form, you can discuss the unique features of any part of the person's body. :3

        [–]Zombi 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (7 children)

I personally don't see much of a problem with porn, but lets be real here:

Ooh! If you love the human form, you can discuss the unique features of any part of the person's body. :3

We ALL know this is bullshit. There's no actual discussion within porn; at least none that is thought provoking. You're masturbating, not writing up a lecture I mean come on now.

Are there thought provoking discussions about porn? Sure, but I've NEVER seen an actual well thought out debate on gonewild or pornhub or any blatant pornographic site/sub.

Lets not act as if the creepy guy talking about a chicks ass is trying to start an open discussion on the female body. Can't make much of an argument when you're stroking your dick with one hand and typing with the other.

There's no discussion if you let your paranoia believe you are being a creep for admiring the human form. If you have been on pro nudist sites, you can see that actual discussions can be had with pictures involved. Nudity is how you choose to perceive it. Even casual nudity with no sexy poses is seen as pornography to most. It's still a very taboo subject in most countries.

Pro nudist sites, sure. We're not talking about nudist sites here, we're talking about porn. Again, lets be real. You go to pornhub and you sincerely believe it's the same display of nudity as a nudist colony? You really think they're the same at all? We're talking about pornography not nudity in general.

        [–]HorseMeat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

You can certainly find nudist stuff on PornHub. To most people, they are considered the same thing. Of course you know the differences, so I shouldn't bother with that card.

To be completely honest, I never expected so much discussion over porn on this site. I would have thought there would be one or two people expressing their thoughts, and then it would quickly die off. It's interesting that most are in collective agreement here against porn. It really does show that the site has set visions in mind even early on in its lifespan.

Well I'm not against porn per-se. I just think the reasoning of "it brings about novel discussions" is a bit bullshit lol. It's to jerk off too and NEVER in my life have I walked away from a porn sub/site and thought "Wow, I really had a thought provoking discussion there." I've always walked away satisfied and ready for bed, though.

There isn't a "no nudity" rule, there's just a no porn rule. You want to discuss the human body and it's nude glory? I don't think magnora7 would be against it.

You want to post a chick getting DP'd in "Big Black Cocks 5"? Yeah, I don't think that will lead to any kind of meaningful discussion. This is a site that's set on meaningful/dense encounters with thought put into those discussions.

Again, I just wanna say I have no problem with porn. I watch it all the time; love the stuff. I just think it goes against the goal of the site and doesn't spawn much meaningful discussion beyond "nice tits".

Yeah, someone mentioned that some of the WPD deaths involved nudity. I guess I should keep that in mind. I'm not sure if it's useful or not.

It's like discussing your favorite TV show or movie when you think about it. :-p

That's fine, I get it. It's been drilled into my head at this point.

At least you got some good years without much in terms of censorship.

It will happen with any site that becomes large enough to where its owners could live off the ad revenue.

The line is the biggest problem in this regard. If we were truly one for no censorship we would allow these types of subs even if we don't encourage or support them in any way.

It's not about censorship, it's about a website's owners not wanting to materially support bad people.

Ooh! If you love the human form, you can discuss the unique features of any part of the person's body. :3

We know how this plays out, comments like "I'd hit that", "nice tits on this one", the sort of commentary you find on sites like liveleak.

        An unfortunate truth. :/

It's not about censorship, it's about a website's owners not wanting to materially support bad people.

I'm not going to argue with that. I was just expressing my view on where I draw the line. It's obviously very different for everybody. I think you, me, and the owners would all draw the line at different places.

We know how this plays out, comments like "I'd hit that", "nice tits on this one", I guess the problem is not enough disagreement would be had.

Hehe. Nothing wrong with everyone being in agreement for a change.

Ultimately it bends to Western values. WPD was only banned because a mainstream paper put it under the spotlight. Sometime WPD 2.0 might be under a similar spot light, and the owners of this site will suddenly find Jesus.

Hehe. Nothing wrong with everyone being in agreement for a change.

I think an unspoken goal of sites like this is that there are problems and we want to fix them, and to say we want to debate is to really say we want to hammer out issues, and at the end of the day, the acquisition of porn is not a problem that needs fixing.

It gets slightly more confusing once you consider that Braincels & The Donald are still around. I don't believe for a second that those haven't received some attention from the media.

Might become a problem in the future. Countries all seem to want a slice of the pie.

Supporting Donald Trump isn't considered tasteless, at least not yet.

As a participant in WPD, I understand that people think it's tasteless, and while I think I can make the case that it is not, nobody is going to listen to it, so we're at an impasse, and on living on saidit.

Controversy has happened a few times in the media, due to how some supporters act on The Donald. Reddit weirdly doesn't seem to care, instead they look for other subs to ban.

Yup, it's human nature. When somebody has strong beliefs on something, it can be difficult if not impossible to change their view on the subject matter.

Porn is garbage and harms all who consume it, as retaining semen is the natural state of man. Not to mention the unnatural surge of dopamine which is hard to replicate with normal sexual relations.

If you are interested in learning more about the benefits, check out semenretention on reddit. I intend to start the sub up here when the time comes.

You should be aware that masturbating actually helps reduce risk of prostate cancer later in life: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3072021.stm. Porn (like everything in the world) has its pros & cons. To me, the positives outweigh the negatives.

If all you want is to live a mediocre life, like your government wants you to, then by all means take advice from modern "science" like that paper.

However, nearly all of the greatest men that ever graced this earth were celibate for extended periods of time.

        [–]Zombi 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Where is your logic at? How does masturbating lead to a mediocre life? Please, connect those dots for me as I cannot possibly see how a good life and masturbation are mutually exclusive. Do you have any proof of what you're claiming? Or do you just have opinions...?

At least that paper has actual sources and people with proof of their education backing it, unlike you. You're just some random internet person, how do I know YOU'RE not a government shill trying to oppress natural human desires?

not due to choice but due to women only wanting hot guys

More people should be content with mediocre lives. People honestly set the standards way too high for themselves these days. It's not healthy for the mental state of the mind.

Also, you bring up the government, but in my country the government is actively going out of their way to make pornography a pain in the ass to access.

I respect your opinion on porn, I just don't necessarily agree with it. I find it helps calm the mind after a stressful day of work.

        Minds has porn.

        Minds has porn stars.

Minds have camgirls you can pay money to.

        Minds also has free speech.

        Just go there.

Then again....Your last comment was 7 months ago so you've already left and probably had no interest in staying here.
