By default SaidIt preferences have you see subscribed content, not all content, on the front page: https://SaidIt.net - and you may be missing some of the best parts of SaidIt. Compare with /s/All.

 

If you suspect SaidIt's majority sees only a handful of default subs,
If your fringe subs that aren't getting the views you want,
If your sparse discussions in fringe subs deserve more interaction,
Then upvote this for awareness and have people read the OP above.

I'm suddenly smashed in the face with this profound realization explaining why so many of my good posts didn't do well. I always knew about these issues but didn't put one and one together. I also suspect that has also stunted the potential of SaidIt at large and our potential growth as a site and community.

Addressing these defaults, new defaults, the subscribed default, and other things are entirely different conversations worth having in /s/AskSaidIt, /s/DiscoverSaidIt, and/or /s/SaidItSurveys.

Importantly, these communities/feeds/threads/blogs/categorizations/topics/subs need to be discussed for /s/Cassy too - but I am busy until 9/11 and then I'll focus on all this and more.

 

Feel free to mention your favourite subs that are not listed, and that you would like to recommend to folks on SaidIt - and maybe we can lobby to have some of them added to the default list.

Please share your ideas on what controversial subs you think should NOT be added to the default list and explain why. For example, off hand I see a few missing: /s/911Truth, /s/ClimateSkepticism, /s/Coronavirus, /s/CorruptScience, /s/LockdownSkepticism, /s/VaccineInjuries, /s/VaccineSkepticism - yet /s/ComedyMusic, /s/offbeat, and /s/Rothschilds are in. Obviously I have my biases.

Also, discuss how this may or may not change the character of SaidIt.

I'm down to add a few more subs to the 'default subs' list since it hasn't been updated in like a year. Especially something covid related. Thanks for being open to updating/upgrading. I really wish I/we'd thought of this sooner.

I don't want to bother you with this just yet, so maybe we want to wait until all the feedback comes in. We may want to take another survey on Monday afternoon for the weekday folks. However, if it's really easy to do now, then go for it.

I can compile a giant list (or a few lists or tables ranked by my subjective priority) for your consideration and/or folks to weigh in on. This need not be all about me, but a seed to catalyze discussion may be necessary. It might also be worth drafting up some other lists as multisubs: "NSFW" (with images) and "Unsuitable Concepts" (controversial words only). We can wait and see or you can ask me to fetch.

Browsing /all/new is every user's duty, so he can catch interesting news and insouciant spam. Always has been. Simple as.

Diligent users already see the "all" tab. Either they ignore it or they use it. There is a strong argument that /all/new should be a logged-in user's default front page. After all, you can bookmark other pages, if you prefer to see that.

the default "home page" will never be /s/all. This takes away the very little editorial power that saidit has, in choosing the "default subs" for /s/subscribed. This is where saidit can present itself as not full of /s/debatealtright or something similar.

I'm not suggesting that be changed. I just want more user awareness about their options and that a deeper SaidIt is possible. IMO this is important to the new and occasional visitors who may be looking for more but don't know the ins and outs. We could add something to the FAQ.

It seems to me that we need to discuss:

  • new FAQ information related to this post
  • new default subs
  • resigning some default subs
  • which subs are "problematic" but worth knowing about
  • making lists of subs, perhaps around topics (and sharing them in /s/DiscoverSaidIt)
  • how we want to organize subs and topical information on Cassy projects

Actually, I'm expanding on and repeating my previous announcement.

As I stated, I already knew about the issues. Thank you for pushing back and making me notice they are interrelated.

It doesn't negate the fact that your 3 posts belonged in /s/VaccineInjuries because there are doubtless going to be hundreds, thousands, and perhaps millions more and we don't need them all clogging up /s/news and /s/whatever.

It doesn't negate the fact that most of the SaidIt core users follow /s/All or have All selected in their preferences for the front page.

It also doesn't negate the need for better organization on SaidIt in the topical subs for lack of metatags. Future researchers will value the cumulative effort we put in now.

We can lobby d3rr to make some changes to the default subs. Here's an outdated big list of many of the best subs, IMO: /s/Surveillance/wiki/index#wiki_list_of_potentially_topically_related_saidit_subs Let's discuss them and others now. Also, bring up topics you like and we may already have a sub for it, or some that are related. Perhaps you want to moderate some. Talk it out.

I'm not management, but I do try to lead by example. Sometimes I get misunderstood and sometimes I just fail. Always I try.

I'm not asking you to write code behind me, under me, or for me. You're unpredictable, volatile, and I suspect you're not too dependable. Regardless, in September we'll be discussing and outlining some ideas for the Cassandra Team projects and you are free to consider them and if you want to do anything for them, lead a solo project, or pick holes in our efforts and shit all over them. Criticism can be valuable too - but it's usually better when constructive. You can prejudge them before you even see them - or when the time comes you may volunteer as you see fit. Eventually we hope to develop a code-bounty system that will payout cash or crypto upon delivery. These projects are not for me. These projects are for our SaidIt and the expanding truth-seeker communities.

no, i am not interested to write code for saidit.. i will admit that i am a loose cannon and i am unpredictable and i am not the most dependable person on the block.. but hey, writing code at the level that i write code has nothing to do with being at my desk at 8am and leaving at 5pm on schedule daily, lol.. dependable on my level is about drinking forty gallons of coffee and smoking four ounces of weed and playing some AC/DC real loud and getting this shit done FIRST FIRST CLASS.

I've directed animation, live-action, and many creative projects - cooperatively. I despise authority almost as much as I loathe lies, so I avoid it or taking it at all costs - even at my own detriment. I don't get emotional much online, though I am passionate. In person I often don't have the time or focus to not be as emotional. Also, I'm not consistent / reliable / timely on many fronts. I want to be, but not enough to create the good habits necessary.

I don't want you to work for me. I hope you might consider some stuff in September (or later if I'm not timely), and then choose to take them on for your own reasons - or choose not to, as you like.

in a nutshell, you need to do a ground-up from scratch rebuild..

the first thing that you want to do in designing a web application is focus on laying out the tables of the mysql database, and drawing up mockups of the various pages of the site.

the mysql tables should be able to store the relevant information that is required to render the various pages that you have mocked up..

rough draft mockups can first be made up with a marking pen or with a crayon..

final mockups should be developed as actual html and these static pages should be delivered to your development team along with the mysql database tables and sample queries.

i am a big fan of developing web applications using C language(gcc compiler) on a nice tight and thin linux box.

number one, maybe we want to shitcan that cloudflare nonsense and we would want to handle any of that functionality directly inside of our custom developed web server software.

the web server would be VERY stripped down and simplified and would also be the actual web application.

no more apache server.

web server and web application would all be wrapped up into one application that would bind to port 80.

I agree, but I respect the M7D3 founding concepts for SaidIt. /s/Cassy will be different and have an open process - but it won't be wild chaos either.

That is a terrific idea!!! It might be worth having at least two of them though. "NSFW" and "Unsuitable Concepts" (I do not like to /s/WatchPeopleDie, but there aren't words I need to avoid.) I stopped categorizing SaidIt subs a couple years ago (long story) so you can ignore the bottom majority of this wiki post, but the top is important about MultiSubs that combine multiple subs into one feed. There are Linked-Multisubs and User-Multisubs like the many I've created in /u/JasonCarswell, in the sidebox listed below the subs I moderate. You can copy my user-multisubs to your own user's profile where you can then customize them - or you can just start your own lists.

s/all/comments is a great place to catch spam comments. Those often lead to other spammer accounts, as it's common for them to interact.

    The default used to auto-subscribe new users to all subs. But the subs were chaos without management. Worse, new subs are being created all the time and people were/are not aware of them, much less not auto-subscribed to them. I don't know if they consulted the community when they picked their preferred list, or consulted the community when they decided to implement it. I understood their decision but was never for it.

    Many times I've considered doing regular announcements covering the latest subs. They wouldn't need to be by any schedule, as long as subs weren't unfairly omitted. There are many other things like this that might be good for SaidIt as a community. Many of them could be auto-generated too, with a coder or few.

      How do you measure popularity? Some are much older than others. Some already have the special privilege of access to the front page. Some are popular but not public and some are not allowed to be public for their controversies.

      What's the magic ratio equation, and how does the sub's age factor in? And who's going to write a script to tally all this up?

      What if there's an important topic that doesn't get a lot of traffic? ie. /s/Fulfillment and /s/WellBeing are new and /s/Cooperatives and /s/FLOSS I have sadly neglected, but IMO it's critical. Obviously I created those but there are many others like them by others that could and should also be included.

      May I recommend /s/Russia. I post there and would like to grow this in to a place where one may visit to obtain Russian orientated news that's primarily censored from elsewhere, such as Reddit.

      anyone coming here will have been to reddit and will know how it works. Find subs thru all and thru searching for them, and anyone on the internet knows how to use a search bar.

      You assume too much. I didn't come from Reddit, and I know of others too. Now I'm trying to bring folks from Facebook, and other realms here.

      Find subs thru all and thru searching for them, and anyone on the internet knows how to use a search bar.

      Do you know what the last batch of subs I made are? Most folks don't unless they are brought to their attention. Old-Reddit/SaidIt search is for shit, and so is DuckDuckGo, etc. Until there's a good search here you can't rely on it.

      That's how it first was, but even then once you had an account it didn't automatically subscribe you to all the new ones.

      I don't think so. I think it's just inept management.

      Originally it started that you were automatically subscribed to all of the subs that existed. The catch was that for all the new subs that were created thereafter you had to self-subscribe instead of automatically be added.

      Then because they thought it was too much, too many subs, overwhelming, or whatever, magnora7 (and d3rr) decided to create a "select" list of default subs and have people automatically have those when making a new account. They didn't ask the people which subs they wanted to include on the "default list". It was decided for us.

      SaidIt is not remotely as open as it could be.

      Yeah the default list was too big. They should have started with 20 general purpose subs and let it grow organically but it seemed to me whoever was setting it up knew what they were doing but they implemented everything in such a way that it would fail to grow.

      -1 app notifications don't work. Those notifications are critical for anyone trying to grow a community. When every other social media is yelling hey, come back, people are replying to you, what happens to the one that stays silent?

      -2 Search doesn't work. What is the point of posting about a topic when once it slid down the new posts list it is buried forever with not even a search to find it?

      -3 upload to imgur doesnt work.

      -4 Much of the time the thumbnail image doesnt work.

      You could message d3rr about any of that and he made it clear he was quite happy with it as it is even though the number of users was rapidly dwindling.

      There was so much they could have done to make saidit better than reddit. They could have done hashtags like twitter. They could have allowed embedded images and videos in posts like telegram and twitter. They could have introduced encrypted direct messaging. They could have added a mailbox to allow users to receive external email yet after going to all the effort of setting it up and encouraging thousands former redditors to join they did nothing except ensure the restrictive format remained unaltered.

      The exact same thing they do on reddit and even that communities.win site. They work to prevent the users from composing compelling informative posts by not allowing images snd text in the same post.

      There was zero management on creating subs other than a wait time and then later a 40 max. THAT was the problem, always was, and still is.

      We needed sub curation. M7D3 failed completely on that front. I and others were willing to do it.

      LONG ago I recommended a site-wide notice area above or below the SaidIt search section in the sidebox (like in my CSS on /s/DecentralizeAllThings). This notice area would be brief with a few links to the latest news, updates, notifications, etc. They failed on that front too.

      Yes, search sucks. I've got an indie-server and rented a VPS for decentralized platforms (Lemmy, Movim, NextCloud, PeerTube, Mastodon, etc.) and all we've got up is Docker and https://Projex.Wiki. /s/Cassy needs expert help. I'm absolute shit at web admin stuff. YaCy would be the decentralized search engine that could crawl SaidIt, WikiSpooks, Communities.win, and all the truth-seeking sites we can think of.

      Imgur uploads was broken for a couple years, then was fixed and worked since so far as I know. Haven't had problems.

      The /u/d3rr is dead. Long live /u/smokeDrugs. He might help you.

      Yes, hashtags/metatags was at the very top of my wish list. I don't know about embedded media, but I offered to host an archive if someone with code skills could make it. Don't know anything about encrypted direct messaging other than there are lots of Android apps for that. Mailboxes would have been great.

      More important than all of these is the closed nature of the SaidIt management of magnora7. Because he refused to open it up for discussion nor improvement, because he simply hands down dictates, because he won't let others help manage SaidIt, it can only be as good as he allows by lazy default.

      I don't know exactly what this means. I'm trying to set up a couple Lemmy sites. I'm guessing they won't be much better. If I could code I'd set them up and set up an archive/search system to backup and share all the posts, media, etc. ideally with a good decentralized opensource gallery app (rather than having the Projex.Wiki be a large image bank).

      I joined mastadon.social. Excellent format. They have it all. Even hashtags and really, hashtags are like virtual subs right? Thats how I like to think of them. I think a mastodon.saidit would be a good thing.

      Finally got a Lemmy instance up less than 24 hours ago. Mastodon is lower but on my list.

      Lemmy is a decentralized Reddit-like feed forum. Simpler than SaidIt, but decentralized and well supported.

      Somehow the Mastodons are supposed to be a decentralized network. I haven't played with it enough to know how to interconnect to "follow" you. Or to interconnect federated Mastodon and Lemmy.

      Yeah like you just said Mastodons is supposed to be decentralized. I've been looking more closely at it. The mastodon.social appears to be their main server as it has the most users by far and this guy Eugen is the lead developer and admin.

      So scroll down and look at all the servers they banned from connecting with their mastodon.social. I mean like WTF !! Why are they gonna go to all that trouble of setting up this distributed network and then ban everyone else from connecting with their server?

      ...and that Eugen character does nothing but post pictures of cats. Weird.

      Oh yeah I see how this works... I followed you even though we are registered at different servers. It just asked for my @user@server address and that was it.
