/u/diogenesjunior was banned for some unclear reason and /u/anescapee seems to have self-deleted

u/Earendil is banned too now. He wrote quality comments. Not going to be anyone here to talk to soon.

Note: Amelia stop removing my goddamned comments, you aren't a reddit admin ffs.

What the flying fuck?!?!

THIS is what a few of my forthcoming projects will address. We need ACCOUNTABLE, BETTER, and TRANSPARENT systems in place. People are being disappeared and few know about it - or why.

I don't know what /u/diogenesjunior did to deserve the wrath of M7, but from what he showed me it was a typical M7 meltdown. DioJr didn't spend a lot of effort laying it out, as he was pissed. It seemed kinda sketchy. It's even more sketchy that he selfishly deleted all of his posts and comments so that if he couldn't have them no one could, or something like that. I've been on the verge of organizing a campaign to restore him and his stuff, but I don't want to back the wrong horse on the off chance he deserved it.

I also thought /u/Earendil was one of the good ones too, though I didn't get to know him as well. Though how can anyone know anyone on these anon boards. If there's a better forum I'd love to hear about it. Until then I'm here. But I'm no longer sitting by, and will soon be sharing my ideas on next-gen forums.

Early on I said we need a town square. Sure there'd be drama, and sure there's be drama-mongers, but they could be dealt with, and more importantly - at least people could have their case heard by their peers. Currently there's only M7. Sure it's a mighty burden - but he's take that on by himself and CHOSEN to not delegate any of it, much less ask for help, ideas, etc. SaidIt is coasting, adrift without goals nor a future.

To call magnora7 a monarch or dictator is an insult to royalty and tyranny, as they at least have support. M7 brought wonderful new ideas to fruition, but since then he's kept it all close to his chest, secret, opaque, mismanaged, inconsistent, and seemingly aimless. I can't even be restored from being unjustly banned a few places (ie. https://saidit.net/s/vampires/about/log). That said, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. I'm not here to shit on M7. It doesn't look good on him, me, or SaidIt. I'm here (or soon will be posting) to constructively criticize and build upon and improve things. M7 is a giant, who stands on the shoulders of other giants. IMO, we could be giants too - taller, flexible, resilient, fair, etc. I would hope that if my seed ideas were to grow, improved by other ideas, hopefully even replaced by better ideas - I would hope that M7 would join in that effort. I'm not about replacing so much as evolving.

Presently I'm cleaning up my sub ideas and I have a few more posts to go. I suppose thereafter I should present my trinity of next-gen-forum projects: 1) a better democratic system (a first draft of my grand concept framework, hoping for improving feedback), 2) a better ergonomic GUI with vastly superior functionality and "bridging", 3) coding/dev/building discussions. I'm no coder, but I can start the conversation and hope others can capably run with it. Even if no one steps up, I can animate a simulation of how my revolutionary next-gen forum might work.

We, not just SaidIt, need to also build a series of liberty manifestos, for lack of a better term. That's yet another series of projects. These would be clear plans for everyone to improve upon, from which to start out in a unified direction, even if the path wanders a bit. More on these soon. I know this is a lot, but it's all critically necessary. And I haven't even touched on my media and personal projects. I lost a dozen years to big pharma, but I'm ready to direct animation and creative projects again.

In 10 or 20 or 30 years there's no way SaidIt will remain much like it is now. I'm certainly not suggesting that SaidIt must die or be subverted or any such thing. What I am saying is that on this forum we can plan the next forum, and it need not be like this.

What the flying fuck?!?!

THIS is what a few of my forthcoming projects will address. We need ACCOUNTABLE, BETTER, and TRANSPARENT systems in place.

How can the "out of the frying pan, and into the fire" scenario be avoided.

At this point, Saidit is in the hands of a philosopher king (or benevolent dictator ), who carved out his own country.

Many concerns are legitimate.

I'm not trying to marginalize anyone's situation.

Overall, the situation amounts to 1st World Problems. Although, first world problems are sometimes shitty.
For example, if you live in Texas right now... !

M7 isn't a vindictive person Far from it.

Move on, make an alt account that is similar in name to the previous, and minimize whatever infraction(s).

That's what the shills do. Some shills can be cool, and will make friends with you. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as long as you are experienced enough to recognize the difference.

If you haven't been burned by a shill buddy, then you're not experienced enough.
Even so, most never know for sure who is who.

Also, shills aren't necessarily bad people. However, they do have an agenda, etc.
It's unfortunate.

People are being disappeared and few know about it - or why.

Getting banned is crap.

M7 doesn't enjoy banning people, and on occasion he probably second guesses himself.

He's in a difficult situation. If you make exceptions regularly, then when do you (re)draw the line.
At some point the endlessly redrawn line becomes meaningless.

I don't have the answers. I can throw out suggestions, but they're only suggestions, and IMO we shouldn't attempt to force anything.

Perhaps, there could be a banning process.

Possibly, also a conditional banned/suspended log. You need XYZ points to be eligible for the log.
We wouldn't want a huge banner of obvious banned shills and advertisers, etc., And they don't deserve the effort.

There could be a threshold of content/comment input, or similar.

Include a comment section for redress of grievance.

Again, I don't have the answers.

I do know:

  • We live in an era of extreme censorship.
  • shills use divide and conquer tactics, so democracy can easily be hijacked.
  • "out of the frying pan, and into the fire" scenario be avoided. This is a luke warm frying pan, at best. Biogenesseñior, or whatever. Don't go with ziogenesejunior. Bad form.
  • Dictatorship by a philosopher king is overall preferable to most alternatives. Particularly, when someone else put in the work.

To the last point, I applaud JC's effort to start his own country. If he wants to go democratic, then it will be a great experiment.

I'd caution against causing a revolt in the only quasi-peaceful dictatorship in the world. Sometimes it's a better system.
Dictatorship is much more difficult to infiltrate, corrupt, etc. This is crucial in this era of tragic censorship.

I vote "NO" for democratizing Saidit. Which, is hilarious.

I fully support JC in his endeavors.

This is not a zero-sum-gain situation.
With luck, we could have both Saidit, and JC Land.

I would discourage you from throwing "sand" in JC Land... ;-)

He refuses to clearly define the line with examples. We need to see what has gone down before. Too many people play it safer than they need to for fear of the ambiguity.

(Similarly most YouTube creators who remain have all gone soft now. It's a tedious distraction now. I'm eager to shift my paradigm and finally drop YouTube.)

I still have 2 (or more) strikes and an axe over my head from 2 years ago. M7 hasn't said otherwise. I've argued the strikes need expiry dates, though it seems like enemies are playing long games of 8 months or more. More importantly, I'm still not sure what it was specifically that upset him enough to declare the strikes and/or which conflicts (certainly more than 2) he even referred to.

but they're only suggestions, and IMO we shouldn't attempt to force anything.

Why not? It's his site but it's our community. There has to be give and take on all sides.

Perhaps, there could be a banning process.

YES!

This is what I've been calling for, most recently here. I want SaidIt to be better, and much of that may depends on M7 opening up. If I wanted to subvert SaidIt I'd have already started my own SaidIt instance with more democratic transparency and tried to lure people over. M7 and I are +97% in alignment with our primary objectives.

Something like this I proposed a while back but forgot until now is a deescalation alternative. When things get hot, often logic goes out the window - on both sides. Only one has the power. Picture admin banning someone for 2 days, long enough for everyone to cool down, take stock, build cases, etc. Next level would be 2 weeks. Next level would be 2 months. Then final.

Why so many steps? Because people put a lot of effort in here. I was banned from Quora for no good reason, with no warning, and all my work was stolen from me - as well as everyone's I interacted with. We had some great content - all gone. SaidIt is not the same, but it's devastating to lose it all, and obviously some people react regrettably (DioJr., Snow, etc) and delete their content out of spite.

We wouldn't want a huge banner of obvious banned shills and advertisers, etc., And they don't deserve the effort.

Obviously you don't put the banned list on the front page. It doesn't matter how long the list is. If you must defend/justify the length of the list then just write a fucking paragraph or essay explaining the perpetual bot/culture/crypto/info/propaganda/shill/spam war (preferably with examples). Make these lists self-generating and automatic so that M7 and other admins are not further burdened. There's ZERO excuse why not to have transparent open records. If anything, the volume of attacks would only prove our cause is righteous and we're unjustly attacked by the organized crime of corrupt-establishment-defending minions.

How could lxxxviii possibly take down SaidIt from behind the scenes? What is ILoveCher?

I understand there may be some security issues, but if we aren't aware of them, then we can't build a next-gen forum that's resistant to them, as well as future larger ops. I don't need to know specifics (I don't code) but others on the team will, and I expect folks like /u/d3rr, /u/Jesus, and /u/Tom_Bombadil will want to weigh in on the next-gen forum projects I'll be proposing soon.

Everyone has their reasons for doing shit. Doesn't make them right. M7 founded this site and has exclusive right to run it as he sees fit. We have 100% right to not like it and to express our dissatisfaction until he bans us. Some of his policies are problematic and the lack of consistency is MUCH more problematic. Worse than those is lack of democracy. There is no shortage of ways to arrange systems to manage things better and democratically, yet still remain under his veto powers. More minds are better than one ego. He has refused every single time without exception. Either he has a tremendous blind spot or he is determined to self-sabotage and stunt the potential of SaidIt - making this place a limited hangout of sorts.

Yes, M7 most certainly has meltdowns with a typical behaviour. He is human, and under a lot of stress (much self-imposed), and when he cracks on occasion, his logic goes out the window, things become black and white and extremist, and he'll make paranoid nonsense accusations at people, claiming they're determined to destroy SaidIt simply because they don't see eye to eye. It's one thing to be ignorant or wrong about something but it's a completely different matter to be liar with malicious intent to deceive. Liar is a completely inappropriate word he's resorted to throwing around, made worse with the weight carried with his position. I could go on, but I won't. He's human, as we all are, and if anyone doubts my words you may ask other respected Saiditors if I am not correct. PM me and I can give you witnesses/references.

It's NOT my goal to attack M7. He is human, and IMO, he is a great hero. There are MANY heroes on SaidIt. Systems are flawed, yet he doesn't foster arenas for improvements. We can do better. He can help. Personally, I WANT him to help with the next-gen forum dev. He has deep experience, insights, and wisdom. All hope is NOT lost. If nothing else, pass that on. The light at the end of the tunnel is coming, and thought it's not heaven it will be better.

It's been a long time coming, but I think I have seed ideas we can all embrace, improve, and build upon, and if M7's ego and need for ultimate control can be tempered then he could certainly be on the lead team, perhaps even the ultimate head of it again. He's been talking about setting up several SaidIt-like forums, but IMO that's not the best long-term solution (in fact I think it would be divisive and negative overall to build separate echo-chambers). It may be possible and practical with what exists in the short term, but I'm thinking beyond what exists to what we'll need in the future. More soon.

It's not a bit far. M7 is neither a dictator nor a monarch, but his executive power on SaidIt is irrefutable. He's chosen to be the judge, jury, and executioner, alone.

Removing /s/Vampires from /s/all doesn't "fix" the mod abuse. He needs to be schooled to correct it and/or modify his sidebox with clearly understood exception rules (not esoteric mumbo-jumbo). Same with /s/IronLeft and other power-mods who censor willy-nilly when it's clearly against SaidIt's policies. Reddit-like mod abuses must be tamed or stomped.

      [–][deleted] 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

How could lxxxviii possibly take down SaidIt from behind the scenes?

He wants to burry SaidIt beneath a mountain of spam and troll posts, so people's speech is never seen.

      What is ILoveCher?

A troll who spammed porn and advocating for violence constantly. Magnora banned him, like, eighty times, and I banned him a dozen times.

I understand there may be some security issues, but if we aren't aware of them

I'm not entirely sure what they are, and I was explicitly told not to talk about the ones I do know about.

Everyone has their reasons for doing shit. Doesn't make them right.

      Yeah.

M7 founded this site and has exclusive right to run it as he sees fit. We have 100% right to not like it and to express our dissatisfaction until he bans us.

Mhm. I do agree with you on some things, and I honestly quite dislike administrating the way M7 does.

Worse than those is lack of democracy.

I agree. I really hate banning people without letting them defend themself, and would personally have trouble making an important decision without asking the user-base.

He has refused every single time without exception.

      Oh.

      I had no idea.

Systems are flawed, yet he doesn't foster arenas for improvements.

I have a lot of reservations about the website, but have yet to publicly express them. There are some things I'm not able to talk about, though, for security reasons.

It's been a long time coming, but I think I have seed ideas we can all embrace, improve, and build upon

      Great, looking forward to them.

in fact I think it would be divisive and negative overall to build separate echo-chambers

Yeah, but he's convinced it's the way to go.

his executive power on SaidIt is irrefutable. He's chosen to be the judge, jury, and executioner, alone.

That's certainly true. And that's currently the power I now have in his absence, and I hate it.

Yeah, but I don't want to go too far with it. I was going to talk to him, but it seems that his account is inactive.

      [–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Decentralized sites to co-indie-host instances is most certainly the way to go. Spread out across the Interwebs, co-host at work, at home, and all the places individuals maintain control over. Fuck corporations and their strangleholds. Provide "free" wi-fi and B.A.T.M.A.N. networks. IMO every capable human should have decentralized home and/or office servers, just like they have appliances.

But dividing up the community is a bad idea, IMO. If the subs had actually been managed years back, then people would be able to share community-packs (for lack of a better term) collecting topical subs into categories/packs. I tried to categorize the subs into multi-subs years ago.

Simplistic options to join might include:

      • Politics Pack
      • Progressive Pack
      • Conservative Pack
      • Conspiracy Pack
      • Non-Partisan Pack
      • Solutions Pack
      • Wellness Pack
      • Counter-Culture Pack
      • Geek Pack
      • DIY Pack
      • Hobbies Pack
      • Video Pack
      • Gaming Pack
      • etc etc etc

I would expect many people would stay within their interests. Further, folks in these communities would decide what subs are included or not.

It would be like a better managed filter level between /s/all and the chaos of all the subs. IMO, without knowing anything about coding, it would still be very possible and practical for the current SaidIt, though sorting through the hundreds of subs would be a pain, but once accomplished could be very worth while.

yet he doesn't foster arenas for improvements.

I have a lot of reservations about the website, but have yet to publicly express them.

I think you should express them, especially in the next-gen forum discussions. Omit security issues or discuss them as hypotheticals.

It doesn't take a genius to ask for suggestions and help. I created /s/IdeasForSaidit, /s/SaidItSurveys, and others to help foster teamwork. I'm quite positive those subs could be thriving if he'd bothered to cultivate a team spirit and community towards perpetual improvement. I don't know what mires him down (besides global tyranny). It's still not too late for some of this, even as we develop the next-gen ideas, we'll still need this platform to be firm to evolve from, ideally bringing all of this content along too.

      [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Decentralization seems kind of cool, but it could be abused if it's too decentralized. That would solve the issue of mod abuse, though, since someone else could just make a new, for example, politics server and users could switch over.

I do plan on talking about a few things, and want to be part of the community.

      [–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, decentralization has some serious tribalizing issues. And they can be discussed and perhaps remedied. I have a bunch of abstract ideas (I'm no coder), and can brainstorm more, but they aren't worth bringing up unless folks get serious about developing a Next-Gen Forum.

        your insanity grows unchecked.

The reason we should not allow tranny mods is because transgenderism is a mental illness. It requires a false belief so central to a person's identity that reality vanishes.

That level of self-delusion is central to the person's identity, a fundamental part of their psyche. On any subject, the tranny will embrace false beliefs that support their identity (the good guy, the wronged guy, the caring mod, whatever the fuck it is) and create whatever tortuous mental constructs that are required to support that belief. They are good at self deception, and so become bastions of utter insanity, fucking up everything they touch

Your overly simplistic narrow mind can't handle bigger ideas, so don't speak on them to avoid broadcasting your ignorance and your own mental illnesses. Also, consider taking some LSD and/or ecstasy to break the cherry of your consciousness. I suspect it may do you some good. You have a lot of potential, it's be a shame not to develop it.

u/Earendil and I've exchanged lengthy PMs recently about our agreement that he should not bave been banned, and how we've disagreed on nearly everything in the past (and perhaps still do), but we agree he should not have been banned. He, you, and a few others (inc. /u/diogenesjunior) here on Saidit can at least carry on a debate, rather than just send insults, and he'll be missed. /u/JasonCarswell's contributions will hopefully continue, even it not as a mod. I sometimes note that I am not sure how long I'll remain, and as I login this morning I see only alt-right misinformation and propaganda on the front page (default subs), and think I don't want to comment on them today (which I'm sure doesn't matter a whole lot). In any event, it's interesting to read the dialogue below between /u/JasonCarswell and /u/TheAmeliaMay, which is the most informative development today on Saidit. I hope those of us who don't mind arguing on this site will remain.

        [–][deleted] 6 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 3 fun -  (4 children)

Well written, Socks. Amelia has banned like 10% of the active users though.

This isn't reddit, we can't just toss away people willy nilly and people came here to get away from that.

        [–]JasonCarswell[S] 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (2 children)

That's not cool. Tell me/us more. We need a serious review/discussion outlining whatever criteria are being employed to ban users. Are they ex-Voat folks who prefer to troll? Are they humans who occasionally dive in the gutter but don't dwell there? Who, what, why, how?

The fact that we don't know these things nor have a place (ie. town square) where we can easily find out this kind of thing is a travesty. My new seed ideas address these, and perhaps we can build a better forum.

It was in my forthcoming plans, but maybe it's already time to create /s/PhoenixForum™, /s/PhoenixUtopia™, /s/PhoenixRules™, /s/PhoenixGUI™, and/or /s/PhoenixDev™ to plant some dreams, build on ideas, and start making the next big thing, openly and democratically.

A better name than "Phoenix Forum" might be in order. Perhaps we should have a SaidIt contest for the best next-gen forum name?

        [–]Questionable 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

"Amelia has banned like 10% of the active users though."

        .

        That's not cool.

A simple review of the mod logs of the subs he controls shows him only banning 2 users for spam/porn. Am I missing something here?

        [–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Sort of. Musk stated fake news for some reason. I haven't gone back to familiarize myself with all of last weeks SaidIt drama, or before. I was deep in pain or my long posts or family drama. So I don't know what Musk is referring to specifically.

My comment had dual meanings. It's not cool if true, it's not cool if fake news.

If I'm not mistaken /u/TheAmeliaMay had admin privileges to deal with spam. During M7's Texan Winter absence Amelia was trying to deal with the mounting problems the best way possible under the circumstances.

Amelia has banned like 10% of the active users though.

That's one-hundred percent a lie. You're spreading misinformation, and it's obvious why. Earendil, Jason, and I are trying to work together to help improve SaidIt — but you're just making the situation worse. Try to meaningfully contribute, or keep your mouth shut.

There's a clear divide growing between those who want to reform SaidIt — like Earendil and I — and those who want to tear it down — like LXXXVIII. I thought you'd be happy that I admitted I was wrong, and want to do better, but apparently not.

        [–]JasonCarswell[S] 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

I appreciate your insightful input. My contributions will soon be of a very different nature. I hope you'll check it out and chose to participate. Having your contrarian input would be very helpful. Utopian dreams need dystopian holes poked through it to better improve the Utopia, etc etc etc - a cycle that can manifest a more practical understanding and navigation of reality. Futhermore, I expect we'll find much more common ground in some of these projects that are not about politics and arguing debates, but about common ground, alternatives, and solutions, including next-gen forums and original media content.

        [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I decided to reverse u/Earendil's ban, although he dragged discussion down the Pyramid of Debate a few times. We talked it out and decided to let it go. He said he wanted to do better, and I agreed to talk with people before banning them.

I still don't know what's up with dio.

You try any exercises for your back? Beginner yoga has the dual benefits of being no more strenuous than stretching, and you get to watch instructional videos by hot babes in spandex. That and girly push ups do wonders for my back.

        [–]JasonCarswell[S] 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

I posted this around when it started:
        /s/Fitness/comments/77r6/pt_exercises_for_back_pain_the_mckenzie_method

I already knew about it, wasn't looking for it, but since it had started, and it came across my screen, I figured other old farts on here might have similar problems, so I might as well share it.

My brother on the other side of town is a chiropractor. I don't have a car and haven't seen them in over 2 years. If I fell or shit the bed or something I guess I'd call. Otherwise it's just a matter of pain endurance, stretching, waiting, and healing. And most importantly, remembering to not do it again. I used to exercise regularly. Time to do it again.

I hope your back gets better soon, Jason! Thanks for all you've done!

        I'd mod s/VotingReform, but ain't really interesting in no'n else. (u/magnora7)

IMO I kinda messed up with /s/VotingReform.

Years ago I recommended that we democratically determine which subs to create. I've made some subs I later regretted because I was focused too narrowly or a better name came up. I was also trying to conserve my little 1/week allotment. For example, instead of 2 subs I crammed in 1: /s/OpenScience_Scientism which sucks because there's no "verses" between them and later came the superior /s/CorruptScience. Nobody, including me (after I gave up), was discussing the future of SaidIt nor the chaos of the subs (especially infuriating for "orderly" me coming from Wikipedia/InfoGalactic/WikiSpooks.) Some of my forthcoming posts will raise these futures again, but IMO better, and I hope folks will engage, but I'm not depending on it.

Way back when I created /s/Voting_IsARiggedJoke I should have just called it /s/Voting to catch all of it. After I saw /s/ElectoralFraud I realized that instead of /s/VotingReform I should have called it /s/ElectionReform. Same difference and not as bad as some sub titles. With feedback and community consensus many errors could have been avoided.

I'll soon be posting my big subs wish lists from over a few years that I would still like to see made, though much like /s/VotingReform I just don't come across too much content covering some of these topics/issues. I am sooooooo backlogged with great unshared content it's aggravating my OCD to the max. Much of those potential posts would require preparation effort - and many will be completely ignored - so it often feels like wasted time. Too often I just post the easy copypasta current event shit (especially when waiting for a big event or my back to heal). I still haven't even done much for many of my passion-project subs: /s/AlternativeEconomics (not yet created), /s/Cooperatives, /s/FleaMarket, /s/PinUps, /s/WikiSpooks, etc.

I suspect many folks won't even notice, but I'll be making an enormous personal paradigm shift shortly. I'll be quitting my activity on SaidIt as we know it to lead interactive projects on SaidIt (even if I'm only leading myself for a while). Reborn like a phoenix rising against tyranny.

I've invited a privileged couple dozen SaidIt users who have earned my respect, seem above the fray, non-partisan, and insightful

Also, I'm honored. I did something similar once with an important reddit sub I created. I invited the best people I knew to co-mod in case something happened to me. And it did, I was banned, so it worked out pretty well.

Thanks! It's been a rough month, but the worst is over. I didn't mention it for sympathy or excuses. It just is what it is - for almost 27 years now (fuck I'm old!). I just need to be smarter about it.

        [–]EVERYBODYPANIC 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

        [–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Thanks, I think. Those won't be my subs anymore. If you like lists, I know of and have made many. Some I'll be sharing soon in other posts. If you have a field or few of interests I can make some for you. I'm not 100% up to date on all the subs on SaidIt, but I'm generally aware of most. I'm soon going to stop following all of that for many reasons, over-arching and primarily because I think I can be more useful and effective focusing on several new interactive projects, all forthcoming and to be shared on SaidIt.

        Meanwhile, check out:
        /s/DecentralizeAllThings/wiki
        /s/Surveillance/wiki

        To all mods of /s/Surveillance:

I can no longer edit the wiki. For most of my subs I turned on their wiki, editable for everyone. I might have limited this one wiki or maybe I screwed up. I don't recall. I should have tidied up that big list wiki page before I un-modded. Notably missing are /s/ResistanceAnalysis, /s/SaudiArabia, /s/Victimhood, and other new powerful subs by other folks. (ie. /s/CultureWar private for some reason.)

        [–]fred_red_beans 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

        Ahh, that's why...

You can add me to whatever one's you want.

Saidit's referencing ability isn't great, so the subs are OK placeholders for a given topic.

An idea I've had is having no subs at all, just a big list of posts - like an inbox. Each post would be assigned to one or more pre-defined topics, like a hashtag. You would then filter the list by whatever topic(s) you like and be made aware of new posts in subbed topics.

As the topic by subs thing gets convoluted as new subs are made that are similar in discussion, but elect to be a separate group.

        [–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, SaidIt has a vast field of limitations. That's why I made subs like topical metatags. I don't crosspost to save time. I don't give a fuck about points that I can't eat. Eyes are nice, but crossposting doesn't get you noticed.

I agree. No subs at all. But many metatags to turn on and off. My grand GUI plan is forthcoming. Just as important is my new voting/rating idea. Revolutionary. I'd love to patent it if I could (as well as a few other unrelated things). On top of this would be a democratic consensus for a modicum of order. Stay tuned.

I haven't been here as long as most of you guys (came summer 2020) but you've posted most of the good stuff which is nice to see in the ocean of pro Trump crap. I hope your back gets better! I hurt my back about a year ago and it fucking sucked, best advice I have for it is to avoid painkillers, stretch, and try to do some basic exercises like girl pushups or yoga.

        [–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Thanks for saying so. The SaidIt community is certainly influenced by external forces, such as Reddit banning right-leaners and the closure of Voat. The Overton window is more totalitarian than ever, and while the insanity of the Far-Left keeps pushing me to the right, I'll never cross center.

Yep the back is strange. Our entire upper torso supported by a single column and a lot of heavy flesh. Time to get back in and stay in shape - or die trying and suffering.

I can't comment on anything, as I understand there's lots of behind the scenes action going on, but could you add a positive note with a pic of the cats (if that isn't a privacy issue of course)?

        [–]JasonCarswell[S] 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (11 children)

In /s/Cats I shared when I got them. They started a HUGE paradigm shift for me then. They started climbing fucking everything so I had to take radical action. Over the course of a couple months I've rearranged almost everything in my place, in a demented kind of Jenga/Tetris game. I built shelves high around the top of one room exclusively for them and reconfigured my place with purpose rather than chaos. I've been meaning to take photos of them in their new habitat but alas, I got only about 7/8th finished when I hurt my back about 6 weeks ago. I've also taken on redoing the storage, workshop, and am making a year-round indoor basement garden.

        Bonus

        [–]asterias 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (10 children)

They are so adorable that I understand why they take up so much of your time :-)

        [–]JasonCarswell[S] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (9 children)

        LOL. They my fam.

I had needed to seriously rearrange everything for many reasons. All will be shared soon enough with photos, when complete, for anyone who cares. I needed a better work space, storage, server room (new), social area (new), work shop (new), year-round garden (new), cat nests (different), and second standing desk (new), and reorganization.

When they first got here, besides climbing all over everything and being freaked out by the new environs, they used to sleep cuddled up. I wish I'd taken photos. Now they stay apart, occasionally get close, and hiss which in turn gets a hiss then they swing their weapons. I don't want to finger and genital mutilate them but I will when I can afford it to let them be friends again with only teeth to fear.

        [–]asterias 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (8 children)

Probably they are into their teenage phase right now, young cats tend to use their nails too much without even realizing it. A friend uses a fingernail clipper designed for cats from time to time, but they are so well behaved that he only does it because otherwise they will destroy all curtains. And if they don't want to be friends, there's no way to force them otherwise, as is the case with everything cat related :-)

Thanks JC for the invites and your contributions to this site. Thank you to all the users who keep this site alive with insightful content. I'm mostly lurking as of now since I'm devoting some time to making bleak, heavy and crunchy metal music to get some of the pathos out. Hope your back feels better soon. As a sciatica sufferer, I know your pain. CBD helps a bit.

            [–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

Thanks for the feedback. As usual, I didn't expect this post to gain traction. In fact, I was hoping more people would notice my Storyotype post.

I really hope you'll share your new music. And I really hope you'll catch some of my forthcoming posts about new interactive projects on SaidIt - including media projects. It would be great to feature some of your talents in those. Bleak is apt. Heavy and crunchy can be many things to many people. I love Bassnectar which is a very different "heavy" than metal.

If I might make a request, without hearing or knowing anything else about your music... Please create a library of sounds, moods, samples, clips, and tunes. They can range from long and ambient to punctuations of thrash and every style in between (including from bleak to hopeful). They can start or end in harmonious order only to change into something else entirely. I already know I won't use all of it, but I can almost guarantee, that some of my media projects (disclosed soon) could employ some good original sounds. (Also, I'm a professional animator and filmmaker (disabled for a decade) but don't know much about sound engineering, among other specialties.) Naturally you can start yesterday, or you can wait until you see my pitches and proposals to see if you wish to bother.

Whether these projects actually become lucrative is anyone's guess, but I also have some grand ideas about how we could create open, transparent, and democratic online cooperatives to self-manage whatever resources can be mustered. The initial seed idea may be mine, but it will need feedback from and improvements by the community. Our utopian dreams will likely be something between failure and epic success, but more importantly IMO, is that it could become a model for others to emulate and build upon.

            [–]Optimus85 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I checked your post and I have to admit, it is a storyotypical world we're living in now. Interesting neologism. How about using the latin root for story which is "storia"? Storiatype? As for the music, it's a work in progress. I'm an OK guitar player but I am no sound engineer. I do try my best to make it sound decent though. I also have a nice synth(which I'm getting more proficient at) that can create some doomy and eerie soundscapes. Thanks for the interest! Best of luck with your projects. You can always PM me for musical contributions. I'll check out Bassnectar and your media projects in the meantime. Cheers!

            [–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

I like the intellectual use of Latin, but I'm afraid the esoteric unfamiliar nature of the strange word might alienate the common folk from adopting a wide usage. Certainly an interesting thought.

I prefer editing to performing. No one expect you to animate live. Movies and books are better with editing. I often cringe at much of the off-the-cuff live streaming, not just because they often waste time with technical issues, but the humming and hawing and bland banter rather than cutting to the chase.

To my point, the beauty of tech these days is that you need not be a great performer if you can do a bunch of takes to get one right. Sure it'd be faster with proficiency, but it's no longer required. Even back in the day John Carpenter made his own minimal moody music for his movies.

            [–]Optimus85 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Just my pedantic side. But I agree that it obscures the meaning of the term. You still would have to explain the concept to the non-lucid though. Technology has its caveats but software editing has become more prevalent and it does take some of the hurdles out of the creation process. Carpenter's father was a music teacher so that might've helped somewhat. I do have some creative musical ideas but I tend to over-analyse what I do and obsess over minute details. Too much self-criticism also. Ignorance is bliss but true knowledge can be scary and depressing... BTW, the Halloween theme is pretty cool.

            [–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Like a meme, IMO, the meaning of "Storyotype" is largely self evident, without a need for explanation.

            Self-criticism is a double-edged improvement/paralyzing sword.

I'm eager to collaborate. I'll be sharing a lot of my incomplete work. I'll likely add lots of explanations and caveats and such to justify why it's not perfect yet in order to per-emptively point out flaws I already know are there so folks don't do the same and so they can offer me the valuable criticism on things I don't see.

It takes guts to open yourself up and put your work out there, especially when it's a WIP (work in progress). People may think that's the best you can do, etc etc etc. Whatever fears you have must always be cut in half at least. Sure people's opinions of you matter to you most of all, but ultimately most of them don't really matter. There are countless users on SaidIt, most I don't even know. The ones I do know have their pros and cons. If one is a bad dancer it makes no difference to me, and I'll still value them the same.

Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

Together we can refine our raw creative lumber into simple structures, advanced projects of purpose, and/or architectural marvels to open the mind.

            [–]LarrySwinger2 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Thanks for letting me moderate the subs. They are in good hands, for I am now the benevolent co-ruler.

What are you looking for in a web browser? I've spent a lot of time trying out different ones as well, and I'm familiar with quite a few Firefox addons, so I can give you recommendations. Although it'd help if you were using GNU/Linux, because I'm more familiar with browsers for that platform, so depending on your needs I'm going to recommend switching to that platform first. But Firefox or one of its forks are still acceptable if you're aware of the right extensions.

You've touched on your ideas for new forum software in the past. How are you planning to bring this to fruition? Can you program?

            [–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

Thank you for caring for the subs. My hope is that you good folks will co-mod them by do absolutely nothing other than dealing with spam and/or calling admins to swat the asstrolls. For anything else, here's the best advice I can think of: ask a trusted friend before you ever do anything. These are balancing goals for more fairness and democratic aspects of my Phoenix Forum idea. If it were up to me there's be no mods or subs, with better systems instead.

I wouldn't have gone looking if Brave were simply better on a few fronts that I can't even recall clearly now. One is that I want unlimited tabs in something more reliable than the outdated no longer supported glitchy Sidewise vertical tabs. To be honest, I'd rather someone combine tabs and bookmarks in a better organized interface.

If I could afford it I'd already have Mint on a second box to begin migrating to. Once there I'd put Mint on the first one and figure out how to mirror myself across both. Much later on a 3rd portable would be nice, in case, though I have no where really to go with a laptop. Beyond the 2, more importantly I want to set up at least one home indie-server for PeerTube, wiki, federating, IPFS, etc.

I can't program, but I can dream, write them down, share them, get feedback, and critically... bring them to life in animations demonstrating the ideas. We can develop and illustrate the functions and flows first, working kinks out along the way - then let inspired code folks figure out how to make it real.

One is that I want unlimited tabs in something more reliable than the outdated no longer supported glitchy Sidewise vertical tabs. To be honest, I'd rather someone combine tabs and bookmarks in a better organized interface.

I'm not sure if you'd even want tabs and bookmarks to be combined. You open a lot of tabs to explore content. If those are your bookmarks, or if tabs get bookmarked automatically somehow, you get a lot of noise in there. The point of bookmarks is that there's no noise because you've manually selected them. There is the question of how you want to organize your bookmarks, but that's something different. Before I give specific recommendations: how do you feel about Firefox and its forks? That's my area of expertise, and I can recommend a setup. I'd even recommend it above one of those lightweight GNU/Linux-only browsers, because only FF with addons is powerful enough to keep you organized with the number of tabs you keep open. So the GNU/Linux discussion becomes a separate one.

The easiest way to start using GNU/Linux is to get / dedicate a secondary SSD or HDD to it. You install a distro to it, make sure the bootloader is on that disk, and keep everything about your main OS intact. It's a good idea to have backups, in case you accidentally install it to the wrong OS and delete all your data. But it's a matter of paying attention during the process. And not picking a dumb distro that insists on deleting your data, or not being clear that it's going to do that. I recommend Trisquel. But anyway, it's good to have backups regardless of everything. Once you have everything installed, you should be able to choose what disk you want to boot from during startup, by pressing a button like F9. That way you can switch between OSes. Is this setup doable for you?

Did the neighbour ever buy your TV, by the way?

Here's the problem with too many tabs: memory limits. I have thousands of tabs, MOST are unloaded, sitting there idle. Their order and hierarchy needs to be stable. If there's a glitch I need to restore the session. I cannot afford to lose my organized system. I would do this with bookmarks if it gave me the same results. Neither are stable enough.

Accidental glitches are only acceptable if they can be reliably corrected. Automatic actions will be learned by the human who will adapt.

Currently a typical hierarchical tab will have a +- or arrow to collapse plus a X to close. One (maybe 2) more icon(s), OR, better icons with more functionality could easily be developed and employed. IMO, there's not enough clever and ergonomic GUI around.

I liked FireFox 56 the best of all. I've been primarily using PaleMoon and WaterFox for several months. PaleMoon was a huge timesuck in Nov-Dec as I fine tuned the fuck out of it to ultimately decide it can't do what I need. This year WaterFox was meh/okay, but got terrrrrrribly slow over 2000 tabs. In a backpain fog it was killing me, crawling around with 5000 tabs. Finally out of that fog, I finally added a now-obvious addon to bookmark-and-close-tabs, so I'm down to less than 3000.

I'm tempted to go back to Vivaldi and relearn it. I cannot support the corrupted FF. Ultimately I don't want to waste more time, and I'd need to switch to Mint before taking on big learning projects.

Yep. Getting new SSDs for my 2 boxes has been near the top of my list for years, but stuff keeps happening. Over the last few months I've realized I need to make the content to make the income to make the changeover. I had been waiting to save the funds to make the changeover to start fresh with all FLOSS and start the content to make the income. Active vs passive.

I am very concerned about screwing up stuff on Linux when I will ultimately try to customize my functionality and ergonomics of my work environment. Having a backup would be ideal if I can afford it.

Unfortunately my old box doesn't do USB (thumbdrive) boots. I have 3x 3tb drives I mean to RAID in it to be a new PeerTube indie-server, with d3rr's help. I have a perfect domain name too I'll buy May 1st. If curious I can share the name in PM. I have dozens of drives of digital hoarding I'd like to RAID and to add via LAN somehow. I'd also like to set up mediawiki and/or image bank and/or IPFS and/or torrent systems to share the shit I've got. None of this is an immediate top priority. My hoarding is an ongoing OCD project. When I share it, it will cease to be hoarding and be an archive. Without some seriously powerful, simple tools for organizing, monitoring, and administration I won't ever be opening up my archive to external submissions beyond trusted good folks like you and d3rr because I have better things to do than filter anon folks. At best I'll set up auto-mirroring redistribution to help decentralize. I'm not aiming to be a hub of activity. I just want info available, especially critical info, not lost to the memory hole of time.

I'd like to see "smart" federated content management arise. Popular content should be co-hosted by many to redistribute the bandwidth loads. If/as popularity wanes not everyone will need to retain it. It should obviously be retained by those who wish to, as well as some by those who just support decentralized archives, otherwise a team could game the system to collect, dominate, and squash. Rare content should also be co-hosted to make it more available and avoid extinction. Balancing between all these is important. Further, sharing the rewards (ie. Filecoin) of popular as well as rare content in a balanced hive-mind is necessary. Diverse options are key too: IPFS, torrents, sharding, etc.

IMO, among many, concepts like this previous paragraph, need to be cleaned up and presentable in manifestos (for lack of a better name (I came up with "Libre-Festos" in my Phoenix Forum post)). These manifestos could have basic, advanced, and expert outlines to be shared on a site like WikiSpooks. I have much more on this manifesto project, yet to be shared, including stuff like technology, resistance ideas, economics, alternative, solutions, liberty ideas, creating solid definitions of things to stop a lot of the confusing divisive language, etc. Obviously many overlap. Robin and I have been discussing ideas to evolve WikiSpooks for years.

Yes, my neighbour got the 50" 4K Smart TV I got before Xmas because my video card can do 4x1080p but not 1x4K and he gave me his old 38" 1080p which is a much better fit for my small place. I spent more than I should have for many new adapters and splitters often from China over the last couple months only to determine I can't have one small monitor mirrored on the bigger screen. After I create my original content to become a zillionaire I'll revisit and reconsider this dilemma.

Okay, so there's a couple of routes you can take regarding the browser:

            • A resource efficient setup, so you can keep 5000+ tabs open without your system slowing to a crawl (category A)
            • Bookmarking tab trees such that the structure is stored (category B)
            • Utilizing sessions such that the tree structure is stored (category C)

            Category A

I wonder if Pale Moon can handle 5000+ open tabs. I've never tried it in that browser, but if memory serves me right, the old Firefox was actually less resource efficient than the newer ones. And you seem to have rejected this option anyway. It could still be worth a try, you never know how it turns out in practice. I know of a lot of addons for Pale Moon, which you can get through the Classic Add-ons Archive, which archives almost 20,000 add-ons. If you want to, you tell me what you're missing in PM and I'll see if I know of any add-ons that serve that purpose. (If a lack of features was the problem of course.) Especially "Tabs Tree" is a well-programmed add-on, much more lightweight than the add-ons available for the modern Firefox.

Another lightweight browser that supports tab trees is Falkon. I haven't used it too much, but based on the little experience I've had with it, I'd recommend it. Only if your needs are simple, though. It doesn't have many add-ons, but it does have the essential ones such as an ad blocker and a script blocker.

A few resource efficient add-ons for the modern Firefox are Vertical Tree Tabs, Power Tabs, and Tab Sidebar. Only the former supports a tree proper, while the latter two provide vertical tabs with grouping functionality (effectively a tree with a depth of only one level, with the possibility to collapse / expand those groups). Power Tabs lets you make folders in which the tabs are grouped, while Tab Sidebar automatically groups the tabs that are opened from middle clicks. This works well with Simple Tab Groups if you want to better organize your tabs. This is my current setup.

            Category B

The solutions I mentioned above are recommended. The problem with the following add-ons is that they make the browser slow, are buggy, or both.

There are two add-ons in category B: Tree Style Tab and Tree Tabs (not to be confused with the obscure Tabs Tree I mentioned above). TST is the best for this, because it preserves the tree structure. Tree Tabs will create a folder with one bookmark for all tabs in the sub-tree, but when you open it, it will just be a flat list. I've experienced bugs with TST, but not many and nothing that can't be fixed. The problem is that it makes your browser slow. Tree Tabs also makes your browser slow, but not as quickly as TST. It does have a bug where all your groups get merged into a single one, and I believe your tree structure also gets lost when this happens. YMMV, maybe it won't happen to you.

            Category C

You can't just use any session manager with a tree tabs add-on, because it won't preserve the structure. The add-on should have a built-in session manager.

Tree Tabs falls in this category as well, as does Sidebery. The latter can also store your session automatically. And it doesn't make your browser slow! I would recommend it if it weren't for this fatal flaw: it also has a bug where your groups get merged into a single one, and IIRC the structure gets lost. Yep, just like with Tree Tabs. Again, maybe it's something about my setup that causes this and you won't experience it. Or maybe it's been fixed by now – I haven't used either of these add-ons in almost a year.

            Overview

I'll just summarize the above quickly to give a better comparison.

Well programmed solutions but with fewer features

            • Tabs Tree (PM / WF)
            • Falkon
            • Vertical Tree Tabs (FF / WF) (Can be combined with Simple Tab Groups)
            • Power Tabs (FF / WF) (Can be combined with Simple Tab Groups)
            • Tab Sidebar (FF / WF) (Can be combined with Simple Tab Groups)

Solutions with more features but which are heavy / buggy

            • TST (Can bookmark trees and be combined with Simple Tab Groups)
            • Tree Tabs (Can bookmark trees, and has groups and a session manager built in)
            • Sidebery (Lightweight but buggy; has groups and a session manager built in)

            Further mentions

Finally, there's an add-on called OneTab, which will aggregate all your open tabs into an overview page, and then close them. You can do a little tab management in this overview page. Namely you can organize them into editable groups. Handy, but it won't save your tree structure.

Let me know if this helps.

            /u/send_nasty_stuff, I've un-co-modded from /s/altrightwebm.

I feel like somewhere in my nearly 700 messages are a few crossed signals about whatever you wanted me to help you with on your sub's CSS. I really regret not being better at keeping up with correspondences and thus not being helpful. I may still yet come through before our days are over, but for now it makes more sense to put it on the shelf. Thanks for considering and indulging the idea.

No worries Jason. Sounds like you have a lot on your plate.
