ip2 brought 95% of the initial traffic to this site. catering to one troll is so stupid. so much for being different than reddit

[–]magnora7[S] 48 insightful - 17 fun48 insightful - 16 fun49 insightful - 17 fun -  (42 children)

IP2 brought maybe 40%. It's not "catering". Our server company said we have to do this or the whole site goes offline. We've already changed server companies 3 times. We have no choice.

[–]FreeMaxB 40 insightful - 7 fun40 insightful - 6 fun41 insightful - 7 fun -  (13 children)

ip2 brought majority of the initial traffic here. bowing down makes this place no better than reddit. i wont post that server company name out of respect but them pulling this shit shouldnt even shock you if you knew anything about them

[–]zero8 30 insightful - 14 fun30 insightful - 13 fun31 insightful - 14 fun -  (10 children)

The server company homepage literally says they support "black lives matter and social justice", now the biggest sub on saidit is a tranny sub /s/GenderCritical so i guess the server company will be happy.

[–]anfd 50 insightful - 6 fun50 insightful - 5 fun51 insightful - 6 fun -  (7 children)

GenderCritical is not a "tranny sub", it is a sub that's critical of transgender ideology and one that "social justice warrior" types would rather shut down.

GenderCritical is a sub of sjws who are only "critical" of trannys, youre morons who got fucked over by your own side because you disagreed on an issue

it's a weird hill to die on, they're against trannys but ok with dicks in guys asses

no it didn't. Saidit had been here a long time before IP2 arrived. Although IP2 came in like they were jesus.

    [–]FreeMaxB 21 insightful - 6 fun21 insightful - 5 fun22 insightful - 6 fun -  (2 children)

way more than 40% especially when we first joined. the whole front page was all upvoted ip2 posts where we had to switch it so didnt show on the front page. 90% of all other boards were dead and if you go by post count its not even close ip2 has more combined activity than the rest of the boards combined. we were only gonna to use when boasted the site traffic soon as one guy bitched no longer useful

Well... IP2 was really the only part of saidit that actually violates their acceptable use policy, so yeah it will pretty much stop there.

Thank you for your honesty and openness; However, we all know that the precedent has been set and the deadly countdown has begun. This little (and seemingly harmless) act of censorship will not pacify the aggressors. Oh no, it will only make them hungrier, and eventually you'll be forced to remove all the "undesirable" content, essentially turning this place into a desolate version of reddit. So, are you going to take any action to prevent future bans (or, rather, to prevent future attempts to make you and us bend the knee)?

    [–]suckitreddit 14 insightful - 5 fun14 insightful - 4 fun15 insightful - 5 fun -  (0 children)

We need to get the funds to fucking sue these companies for this bullshit.

    [–]JasonCarswell 9 insightful - 6 fun9 insightful - 5 fun10 insightful - 6 fun -  (4 children)

I guess we can thank IP2 for being the "disposable target" for the aggressors while the rest of the site can hopefully move on without DDoS and such. Or perhaps you are correct and "they" will be unrelenting. I wouldn't expect them to be able to cry wolf too many times before we find some alternative solutions. There's always a way. There's a good quote about the nature of the Internet that escapes me that would fit well here.

For anyone here who isn’t familiar with this routine yet, it’ll start with this leftist demanding that subs considered egregious be removed, then it’ll continue to the point where being right wing is against the rules. Many subs will be crippled by the quarantine “feature” too, but ultimately be banned eventually.

u/magnora7, you do realize that right wingers are the overwhelming majority of your users, right? If you can’t find a way to prevent this process from the very beginning, your site will go the way of digg since your user base will abandon this place, with the left wingers simply staying on reddit. I’m not sure of the solution myself, but your website will not survive if you go down this slippery slope like reddit did.

Imagine trying to run a pro-freedom of speech forum and migrating, multiple times, to a hosting service which doesn't support freedom of speech and bends the knee for leftists. Like you'd probably learn to do research after idk the second or third time.

Remember that user about a year ago that said that unless saidit have clear rules that are evenly enforced the site was going to have some rough times ahead?

Plus IP2 was generally dragging things down the pyramid of debate quite badly

Yes. And for how long? As long as you apply the rules individually on a subjective basis, this is always going to be the end result. I'm not a part of IP2 and was one of the first to block the sub since before proper saidit blocking was in place but seeing a "free speech site, sure!" sending someone away because of your own ignorance over the last few months, if not years...

          I'm so very disappointed.

Might not come soon, but I'll bankrupt them so hard. I'll get all the conservatives, moderates, and centrists to boycott these bullshit censoring companies.

It’s not a surprise. Subs with the tone of an image board or Kiwi Farms won’t be tenable without a far more expensive approach to hosting. I don’t get the impression that this is the purpose of Saidit, and that’s fine. It works.

Doxxing, threats of violence, harassment. It's kind of a joke though, the threads listed in the complaints are an extreme stretch to fit that definition and wouldn't hold up on any legal basis.

Don't know what that sub is about but holy shit this just sucks on principle. If this happened to them, what stops the same thing from happening to other subs if someone doesn't like the content and complains too much.

we need a decentralized software like OpenBazaar or haven app where the content is stored on your phone and not servers

this will continue as people will continue to target saidit or any other website

            [–]magnora7[S] 13 insightful - 4 fun13 insightful - 3 fun14 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

I agree, we looked in to decentralized servers but the technology simply isn't there yet. It's close, maybe in 5 years, but right now I don't see any viable truly decentralized options that we could actually host this on. (needs to run ubuntu, etc)

"...Eventually the person creating these accusations convinced the server company that.."

Can you give us more context on the accusations? I don't really know anything about ip2. (I'm going to assume the complaints were with regards to percived racism or bigotry?)

Was there any validity to the complaints? Where they made completely out of context? Can you give us an example of some of the complaints?

Now that the bar has moved an inch and ip2 is gone do you expect people like the accuser to try and take a foot? Will more bans be coming down now that there is a route to removal? (I know its speculation, just asking your thoughts)

Thanks for the update about what was going on!

I honestly felt like the IP2 sub was being destroyed from the inside. It’s changed a lot in the last 2 months. I’m not surprised this day came. It’s sad.. but I understand.

Idk, IP2 is what brought me to SaidIt, and then I ventured outward and saw how great SaidIt was.. this new batch of reddit refugees kinda ruined that too.. Sad days bois.

Pretty good host, it seems, thanks for the info.

Definitely going to use them over companies like Google (GCP) or Amazon (AWS). Maybe not over Digital Ocean, but I'll at least check them out.

While it's a shame they forced Saidit to remove IP2, considering all the other subs they are still allowing to host, they have definitely allowed 1000% more than Google / Amazon would have.

If this is going to be a trend, though, I might change my mind.

Edit Digital Ocean still better, but I'll consider them as an alternative if a client asks.

What I don't understand is you literally started this board as an anti-censorship board and you've now banned a huge chunk of your userbase with no real proof of why. The pyramid of debate died as soon as the reddit driftwood came and you know it. This has fucking nothing to do with IP2.

While I do believe you, this sets a really shitty precedent for the future and makes me lose faith in this board and you personally. If one pissed off streamer from fucking IP2 can get an entire board shoah'd, I can't wait to see what's next.

It doesn't matter because when you start one you are under the microscope by the US legal system. Which is the real reason all these server companies act like this. Because they legally cannot afford not to.

I hate to make this suggestion, but have you talked to the guys at Voat.co? They're still up, and their content is way worse than anything on saidit. What company are they using?

On the plus side, they can start their own SaidIt instance. I'd love to hear about other SaidIt instances if they do.

I don't know how the federation thing works, but maybe some content can be federated to be kinda seamless maybe sorta perhaps.

I don't see how the complaints were valid. It appears that someone was just abusing DMCA which is against the law. Could you expand more into what forced them to do this?

They were abusing DMCA law, however the server company's Acceptable Use Policy was the problem.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is IP2 and which of the Server’s TOS were being violated with that sub existing?

                [–]fred_red_beans 10 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 2 fun -  (14 children)

Not sorry to see that sub go.

IMO, IP2 was contrary to the Pyramid of Debate as the main emphasis of IP2 was to degrade and demean others. Outside of the debate structure itself, what is the Pyramid of Debate for other than to help the individual to question and to learn? To help enlighten the individual, not beat them down. There's a difference between conveying information saying some people treat others like shit and saying you the fellow saiditor are shit. It's not an act in good faith. To me, acting in good faith is being able to accept another's point of view whether you agree or not. But if your point of view is fuck everybody, or fuck this group or that group, I don't think it's conducive to the enlightenment of others. It only lends itself to ill will. Now, I think it's fair to say I see this group as doing such and such and I disagree with it, but to say fuck that group just because is just prejudice and akin to Name Calling.

As I see it, if your main point is just to degrade or demean others, you really have no point at all.

This is very encouraging for those of us who are deplatformed and politically incorrect. I2P was systematically breaking Saidit rules, and yet Magnora fought hard for them anyway. Which means that all the rest of us have to do is follow the rules!

                Thanks.

I know this wasn't your choice and appreciate that you fought against your host's judgement. I didn't visit the IP2 sub regularly, but this sets an unfortunate precedent that someone can go and complain to your host to censor other people's speech. Seems like similar tactics that AHS uses on reddit to shut down communities they disagree with. The hosting seems like the weakest link for sure.

My concern from the beginning has been that any community that is centralized can be toppled by bad actors, and this reinforces that belief. I wonder if decentralization is the future of free speech online, federation, P2P, blockchain... I also know other sites such as gab had similar issues getting dumped by their host, maybe some research could be done into their hosting provider. I imagine infowars, zerohedge, cryptome, wikileaks, cryptome, thepiratebay have gone through the same thing also.

Anyhow, I don't want to be a complete downer, I really enjoy this community and appreciate all the work /u/magnora7 and /u/d3rr have put into this place. I really don't want to see this go the path of reddit, and if there's any way the community can help out I'm sure others here feel the same way.

After the racist porn posts yesterday it doesn't surprise me. Some basement dweller is just trying to get saidit killed off because they can't handle the fact that Reddit is turning into a echo chamber as people leave it. These snot nosed little shits know that they are on the wrong side of everything and that's why they can't let stuff like public debate or public forums go uncontrolled by them. They claim to be Anti-fascist yet all they do is try to be an authoritarian voice for anyone who disagrees with them while being racist towards anyone who isn't white that disagrees with them.

They need to come to terms what reddit is dying. They did it themselves by injecting politics into every subreddit so that they can express "orange man bad" everywhere. Now they've turned their sights on saidit.

I’m just posting here to say thanks magnora. You put up with us for a long time. You are a good guy/gal no matter all the hate you get. I hope your server company treats you right. Good luck homie.

our server company is forcing our hand.

So change servers or close the site down. If you give in to this shit the server essentially runs saidit not you.
