im very suspect to the cloudfare now. I gotta find the bicycle on a captcha every 20 minutes.

Is there a possibility of leaving the logged in IPs alone?

The ddos ended so we should be getting back to normal now.

Is there a possibility of leaving the logged in IPs alone?

Yeah that's not a bad idea, maybe we will try that

At this point I've been fully blocked from accessing Saidit for perhaps five minutes.
This is a major improvement on what we've seen before!

Who is likely behind the ddos?

Retards.
Leftists.
Democrats.

You know, the exact same people who say If you don't like X go make your own and then get mad when you do

Half our brigading comes from far-right people, so it's really not a left/right thing, tbh.

It's definitely people who hate that we're operating outside their chosen narrative though. I think it's more likely to be from IP2 to be honest, because the one a couple days ago was definitely from IP2. Some of these streamers are mad people are talking negatively about them, which hurts their viewership numbers, which diminishes their income, so they pay hired people to do a DDOS to try to take down saidit. Tbh that's probably what happened yesterday too

[–]Undiscovered 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (13 children)

far-right people

How do you know they are not sheep in wolves clothing? (purposefully backwards)

Some of these streamers are mad people are talking negatively about them They shouldn't do things that make people talk negatively lol. Like bringing a drugged/drunk woman into their hotel room while she has her little kid with her. No big deal right?

[–]magnora7[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (12 children)

I don't know. How do you know the left-leaning or right-leaning attacks come from the right or the left? You can't.

So again, proving the point it's not a left/right thing

[–]Undiscovered 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

I just don't think far righters care much about this place. They have their homeland in voat. Lefty types are the one's to say "go somewhere else loser" and then freak out when we find somewhere else.

I do agree that it isn't truly a right vs left issue. It is about open speech vs monitored speech. It is just typically the left wants more monitored speech these days. It used to be the right doing that more. It sucks, because now there is a lack of idea opposition, so the echo chambers are only going to get worse, and the attacks only more vicious as they feel more righteous for their causes.

I just don't think far righters care much about this place.

Oh you'd be surprised... I've already had to ban lots of super-far-right people to keep this place's culture from getting hijacked like voat's did.

Lefty types are the one's to say "go somewhere else loser" and then freak out when we find somewhere else.

Yeah I know what you mean, but there's also a dedicated contingency of super-far-right people who want to turn every forum in to voat as a way of spreading their message.

But in the end, both sides of extremists are causing problems for saidit. That's why we were originally named antiextremes.com!

It is just typically the left wants more monitored speech these days. It used to be the right doing that more.

I completely agree there. I think it's just because the right used to have more power over the authoritarian system, and now the left does. So it seems like the censorship moved from the right to the left, when really it's just the same authoritarian structure doing it, run by different groups.

Like this: https://i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/956/597/f57.jpg

so the echo chambers are only going to get worse, and the attacks only more vicious as they feel more righteous for their causes.

Yup I agree, the extremists on both sides are going to continue to get more and more hardline. But that's why saidit exists, to be that middle ground that is rapidly disappearing. People who can see the shades of gray on issues are very important to humanity actually getting anywhere culturally, and also important for preventing war. A war cannot be fought if there are no extremists willing to die for it.

Well thought out, and based (for the Ben comic). This is a great place, and I will always keep telling people to come here when they seek to somewhere to go. People are getting tired on their own, without the need for any formal recruitment (very good sign). I see people all the time say "man reddit sucks" on reddit, they just need to stop going there and be exposed to the fact that there ARE options.

[–]magnora7[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

Yes this is Ben back before he became a Trump-cheerleader. I think he actually used to be way more based back then, but I think money got to him and he realized he could get way more visibility and money if he was a Trump guy.

But yeah, you're right, people just need to know about the options. I heard people saying like "I wish someone would make an alternative for reddit!" with 100 upvotes... I want to shout from the rooftops that we've been here for 2 years, and there are other alternatives too!

I always just say "Maybe check out alternatives like www.saidit.net and www.notabug.io"

This 1. Makes it look like I'm not shilling for just saidit 2. Gives them multiple alternatives to try out 3. Is brief 4. Is not pushy 5. Has clickable links

All 5 of those are important to getting the most people to check it out, imo.

[–]Undiscovered 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

I can't wait for this point in history to be done. Trumpism ruined a a lot of good people. Hopefully they recover when he is out of office eventually. I only see Ben comics pop up randomly here and there, so I haven't seen his transformation. Gross if it was money, sellouts are the worst. It makes me question if the person ever actually held any of the opinions they represented. Could just be throwing out different nets in hopes they catch a school of fish.

Right now I am suspicious of Ruqqus for that reason. They seem to have a lot of sudden support. I am on there a bit, but the amount of people pushing for THAT to be 'the site' is strange. I agree those 5 are key. People want to have a choice, and they should. We don't live in a world where only one website has be chosen. People just need to open up some more tabs lol

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I just like ruqqus because it isn’t as full of right wing crap

[–]Chipit 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

False flags are a common leftist tactic. You can always tell as they speak a ridiculous version of what they imagine the right thinks. It's the result of censorship cutting them off from opposing opinions so they don't know what the other side thinks and don't care either.

It is enough that they are The Other, and making up what The Other actually thinks is standard.

If you don't like X go make your own and then get mad when you do

It is because they think no other place will allow us to speak. So when we finally find those places they sperg out about it and do what they can to get that place banned. We are rent free in their heads and I love it. While they are getting shit banned I am making myself stronger both intellectually and physically. They seriously underestimate the strength of a few good men banded together striving for a successful future. Numbers don't matter. Preparation is the key.

People that don't want an alternative platform...

Hmmmmm

[–]Undiscovered 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I suspect that is A LOT of different groups; some probably working in conjunction with one another. Reddit holds so much power in terms of idea spreading.

When you were a kid, ever go to the beach and build a sandcastle? After an hour or so, did some other kid come along and stomp on your sandcastle, laugh, and walk off?

That other kid grew up to send out ddos attacks.

[–]Jesus-Christ 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Reddit. In his last post he said the site was getting, "a pretty well-orchestrated attack coming from literally billions of IP addresses." so I doubt it's just some kid with a shitty little program. I don't really know what the prices are for botnets and stuff but I'd guess it'd cost quite a lot for what was being done the other day. Or maybe it's Cloudfare, forcing their customers to upgrade and buy better protection.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think it's some kid, paying some people who know what they're doing. DDOS attacks for hire, like a digital hitman

Day 3 of the attack. This has been going on a while eh?

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yeah of and on, we had a day off in between.

We also just had a little DDOS an hour ago, for a short bit, but they couldn't get a foothold so they gave up quickly this time.

Also this is going on: https://saidit.net/s/Internet/comments/4ve7/large_portions_of_american_internet_suffering/

So while I feel pretty confident I know who did it 4 days ago, I'm not sure who did it yesterday. Might be the same group, might be related to this more general mass attack

[–]Riva 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Very cool. I was one of the first to jump from digg to Reddit. I watched digg die and the users flock to Reddit.

Now I'm watching the same thing happen here. It's really interesting. Good job at keeping the site up.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

...so, any progress in harnessing the power of DDOS to make a profit?

Considering how much it happens I think we could all be millionaires by now.

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Ha I've been too concerned with blocking them to research more about capturing their traffic to make money.

However I did notice recently that although they make tons of requests, we don't actually serve them much data, which means they're initiating requests but not waiting to receive data. So the odds of making them do any bitcoin mining is pretty slim unfortunately.

However it would be kind of funny if we could redirect the DDOS attacks to another server, and take that one down instead of us, especially if it was a server used by the DDOSers. Kind of far-fetched, but it'd be funny if it worked. I'll think about it some more

Build a DDOSon sphere!

well it flagged me. Happens when I try to open multiple web pages at once rather than one at a time. Tried using a vpn, but I'm guessing it's getting blocked when a bunch of people try to login from the same VPN server, so I'm using my phone's connection atm.

The last three days, saidit has been completely blocked. I think your new cloudfare partner has been blocking Tor users.

But it's back now. Did you fix something?

Can we be sure saidit will stay online for Tor users?

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

When we're not being actively DDOS'd, then we enable tor

It was down about 20 minutes in total, in various bursts
