The server company messed up the autopay account.

Haha. Touche.

But seriously reddit's big enough they actually own their own hardware servers, I assume? Or do they rent from AWS or google I wonder?

[–]Canbot 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (12 children)

I don't think they need to shut down reddit any more with how locked down it is. 10 years ago anyone could post anything and the algorithm would put it on the front page. Now everything gets filtered and controlled.

[–]magnora7[S] 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

Yeah. Even the slideline subs like /r/conspiracy, I used to be able to post stuff there and get a wide audience. Now I post the same quality of stuff, and it immediately gets like 5 downvotes and no one ever sees it. So I quit posting there, because that always happens. I assume a lot of other people had the same happen to them. It's how the narrative is controlled, and it's a major reason why saidit doesn't have downvotes.

[–]raven9 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I think if you ever post on /r/conspiracy your account is marked and you are targetted for vote capping.

[–]magnora7[S] 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Could be. I definitely got banned from a ton of other subreddits for participating there. And it's always used as a character assassination thing, trolls are losing their argument and then they go "Oh I see you post on /r/conspiracy, you're clearly a nutter, no need to pay any more attention to you".

Which is of course why the crazy-sounding subreddit is the only one allowed to talk about certain things. To make those ideas look crazy by association. One way of controlling the Overton Window and controlling the online narrative.

[–]raven9 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yep I think they did the same thing to all of us that posted on conspiracy. That reminds me... Did you notice /r/conspiracytheory has been abandoned? The last new post was 2 years ago. I tried to get it but if course reddit would not give it to me....

[–]magnora7[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No I hadn't heard of that one before. /r/conspiracy_commons is alright, it's one of the few I pay attention to. It's not perfect, but it's there

[–]Canbot 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Those down votes are not real, that is reddits way of hiding thier censorship. There has been a lot of evidence exposing vote manipulation.

Not to say that vote brigading didn't happen, but it is not tenable in the long term.

[–]magnora7[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah I know, but it still takes it out of the /rising category and hides it so basically no one else can see it except those browsing /new (which is maybe 0.1% of users). And even if organic upvotes do overcome the automated/fake downvotes you get right away, it will never rise to the same level as something unaffected by this, because of how the hot sorting algorithm works.

So it changes the number of people who will see a good quality post from 100,000 down to like 1,000. Or even 100 views, if it's totally downvote-bombed. It's rough to make quality content and then get shut down repeatedly in this automated way, so it's reasonable to give up. It's sad it's so broken. I made saidit partly for that subreddit basically, and yet I've never been able to get an announcement out about it on that subreddit because it gets downvoted censored instantly after posting, and I believe that has seriously inhibited the growth of saidit. And I think that's intentional, they want to keep people on the reddit plantation, so to speak.

[–]asterias 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

They weaponize downvotes so that your posts and comments are automatically flagged due to negative karma. It is more evident on smaller subs like r/greece, where each comment gets immediately a number of downvotes organized through discord, and each time you get the same number of downvotes. It is more evident with accounts that criticize certain minorities.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I see downvotes in a different way. There's two ways I can get my message across, one is writing something popular that gets upvoted to visibility, but the easier way is to write something controversial. Everyone looks at those to see why it was so awful everyone keeps downvoting it.

[–]asterias 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

When you reach negative karma, your posting rights are automatically restricted. Reddit has also other forms of velvet glove censorship, like automatically collapsing comments based on your social credit and so on.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

They capped the downvotes years ago, only 5 counts against your record.

[–]steveknobs 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

reddit looks like a social media, but it is literally a pedo spiderweb and nothing more..

it is a web of deception and lies..

BEWARE BEWARE THAT THESE TWO REDDIT SUBS ARE EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE TO MANY BUT MY POINT IS THAT THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE RUNNING REDDIT.. THE DEVIANTS HAVE TAKEN CONTROL OF THE INTERNET.

I am able to go on reddit

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Reddit went down in 2016 for a few hours to have time to delete something about Hillary that got leaked.

Reddit has been down for 30 minutes now...

Wonder what's going on?

Reddit could be gearing up for Klaus's Cyberpolyon Simulation cyberattack that's supposed to "make Covid feel like a minor disturbance".

but when i go to the grocery store, it is business as usual..

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

grocery store has been missing items for me at different times during the pandemic, it probably depends where we live too. I do think the supply chain crisis is real.

[–]steveknobs 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

it is a "created crisis".. from the ground up..

I HOPE THEY RESET ALL OF THESE DAMMED TELEMARKETERS THAT CALL ME.. LATELY WHEN THEY CALL I ASK THEM IF THEY CAN CALL ME BACK AFTER I FINISH JACKING OFF OR I TELL THEM THAT I NEED TO HOLD JUST A SECOND WHILE I GET MY PANTIES ON.

Works for me now, but I wouldn't know that if I didn't check. Reddit is so horrible.

[–]magnora7[S] 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

Yeah it's back up, down for about an hour in total or so. I only go to a few subreddits anymore. Browsing /r/all is like getting stabbed in the eye. I miss 2007 reddit. Saidit is kinda close, we just need some more people

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

we just need some more people

In a hundred thousand users there'd be a hundred thousand people who make reddit suck.

[–]magnora7[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Yeah I've only tried to get people from reddit to saidit, but the well is running dry as there's fewer and fewer real humans or openminded people left on reddit. Maybe finding people from other websites to come to saidit would be fruitful.

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

I think what you have here is already pretty special. It would be nice to have more people, but there's a certain caliber of person that has filtered through here, I don't think exists readily out there. But casting the net wide is good, what about places like Ars Technica?

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Yes maybe ars technica and maybe hackernews, but I think 99% of those users would think there's not enough intellectual content on the front page, or it's too politically charged in one direction. But still worth a shot, there's probably people on those sites who are tired of the limitations there.

[–]raven9 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

The trouble is if saidit was to become a major player in the information wars, you would be targetted by the same troll farms and corporate shills that has made reddit so toxic.

[–]magnora7[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

We already are, brother. As is every social media website that makes it in to the top 100,000 websites. You get too big, you're on the attack list. That's how it goes. That's why ruqqus failed, and voat failed, and so many others...

Not sure who is running these groups, but they're absolutely swamping the entire internet. Compared to traditional advertising and PR campaigns, it's not expensive to pay a room of college students $12/hr to post misinformation 8 hours a day. So there are likely very many governments and corporations who are simultaneously doing this.

[–]Chipit 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

According to the mole who got into one of their chat servers, they make $14/hour. Probably more by now. The hard left got a shit-ton of cash dumped on it in 2020, and that's how they employ all of these people.

Hey, I've been having trouble with my anti-virus (kaspersky) blocking content or whole websites sometimes (like the thumbnail image gets blocked but not the whole site), and it had a conflict with reddit yesterday, but it's working today... dunno why kaspersky is getting in the way with anything in my browser in the first place... seems to me they're whitelisting CDNs or blacklisting more "radical" providers... i dunno, it's a new behavior for me and their browser extension is disabled, so it's doing this from a network monitor perspective i guess... I was having trouble accessing any of the reddit-clones the last week or so and exiting the antivirus "fixed" it... but just fyi... that's my anecdote.

edit: spelling

[–]Chipit 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

And good on Saidit!

I'm on a couple of other Reddit clones and they have outages or non-working parts of the site all the time. Saidit...just keeps on going. You don't even notice, which is proof of the best kind of technology.
