Interesting, didn't know these details about Brokeback mountain. But then I'd say the lesbian version of it is Blue is the warmest colour. Although the original comic book is written by a les/bi woman, the movie is made by a man and was heavily criticised for the male gaze and perspective by the wlw community. And the sex scenes were sort of soft porn.

Well, hetero men see two pretty women have sex = hetero men like. Furthermore, it presented a deeply dysfunctioning lesbian relationship AND one of the women cheating with a man. So while it is difficult, I can see how someone can be homophobic but enjoy the movie.

With years passing by and seeing some scenes again, I don't think it was all that bad actually. There are some good scenes, probably original conversations from the comic book. Besides, the actresses are good. I found it almost intolerable the first time and by now, I might even like it. (if you cut off the soft porn from the movie)

The director is quite famous and well liked in France so I guess the comic book author felt flattered and confident he will be able to pull it off. And he sorta did in a way. The movie was a success.

I don't there's been anything in gay or lesbian cinema that has had as much impact as Brokeback Mountain, but perhaps Portrait of a Lady on Fire could be closest lesbian film with similar impact?

Looking at something further in the past, something like Thelma and Louise could be considered an impactful movie, although it's never addressed in the movie whether they're lesbians or maybe just bisexual.

Dessert hearts - just cuz there is a sexy ranch hand girl. Has no real relation to Brokeback's plot other than it's a forbidden type relationship because of the time.

It's a good movie for lesbian films and it makes you thankful for smoking laws outlawing indoor smoking.

I know right , it's awesome but I don't think I have ever see it on lesbian movie list.

Another movie I think deserves to be recognized as maybe the best lesbian movie is, Saving Face - lesbian romcom about a lesbian living with her mom who has been ostracized from the American Chinese community.

If we're talking financial success, accolades/nominations and awards, public attention that would be the Koren adaption of Sarah Waters' book, Fingersmith, The Handmaiden. No other lesbian movie has achieved that success in and/or out of the U.S.

For gay movies, Moonlight and Call me By Your Name has come close to reaching the level of Brokeback Mountain.

      • Blue is the Warmest Color (2013) (French)
      • Carol (2015) (English)
      • The Handmaiden (2016) (Korean)

You might like The Chinese Botanist's Daughters.

Also I hiiiighhhhhllyyyy recommend God's Own Country, its a gay guy movie but its was just such a nice beautiful story. The ending was so precious.

In terms of the drama and the epicness and the laser focus on the struggles of admitting to wanting to be with someone of the same sex...Carol, definitely. I find both Carol and Brokeback Mountain to be movies that portray the restrictions society places on homosexuality very well--of course, in each of their own respective historical contexts. But truthfully, being gay has always been very hard, so the setting, IMO, doesn't really matter in this type of portrayal.

My personal Lesbian Brokeback Mountain was the film "Lost And Delirious." In terms of popularity I would say maybe "Mulholland Drive" or "Bound." Although if you go to my sub, r/lesbianmedia, (shameless plug) they really love "But I'm A Cheerleader."

I just thought of another western themed lesbian story.

Godless- a short show with one lesbian couple. I enjoyed the overall plot, and liked that they put effort into making a plausible reason for all the women in the town to be doing "men's" work.

It has the actress from the walking dead who played the doctor in Alexandria.
