Because a crisis means they can over-ride normal laws and morals, and the majority of our dumb-fuck species will go along with it.

We're fucking morons, on the whole.

Of course, the whole 'PATRIOT Act' etc was the classic example. Give up your freedoms for safety! There's a man on dialysis with some boxcutters, living in a cave somewhere, which looks like a big house in Pakistan, but whatever, safety! For the chilreeen!

The framing of events as crises is hardly unique to the liberals. Politicians use this language to keep voter engagement up and their base in a frenzy, and the media outlets do it some more to keep people watching their shows to get those sweet advertising dollars

[–]wristaction 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

It's seemingly only unique to liberals because Buckleyite Conservatism was designed as a means to capture and neutralize opposition to leftism. The root of all tyranny in the Conservative worldview is to make positive demands of government and society. "Liberals", by which I guess OP means Progressives or Leftists, are left with the floor to themselves to make positive demands. That explains the disparity. The explanation for the tactic is simply that people don't get out of their chairs to respond to mere problems. To convince most people that something is at least a problem, its necessary to advertise it as a crisis.

Thats unfortunately true, good point

Yep it's basically entertainment as news. It's rather perverse as many don't understand that it is entertainment and believe it's absolutely true, other people understand they're being dicked around with and reject the facts along with the exaggerations because it's hard to tell the difference. And you've basically got exactly this situation.

It's very Orwellian in a sense. But it's not an all powerful state controlling it so much as it's an emergent property of human relationships and behaviors coupled with mass media, government and corporate interests. And everyone trying to do what they want to gain more power.

I could run on a moderate platform of "We need to be aware of and concerned about the environment, and that includes making some economic sacrifices now for long term gains later, but we cannot sink the economy to fix all economic impact" but that's a losing platform. The extremists will pop out of the woodwork, they'll get the environmentalists who don't give a damn about the economy in their camp screaming loudly about how humans should destroy society for the sake of the earth presenting a false dichotomy of evil Lorax style corporations that want to outright the destroy society also. So both sides are effectively arguing about a clear crisis but both see their opponents as unreasonably crazy idiots because well, the news isn't going to run some guy sitting there calmly talking about how much money should be invested in a seawall to offset projected level rises vs how much should be spent on relocation and moving towards sustainable power generation like nuclear, when instead you can get two guys that think the world is going to end screaming at the other guy for making the world end.

They want to destroy the very fabric of society and replace it with their idea of utopia. They know full well most people don't want society destroyed so they have to pretend the current structure is falling apart or killing millions or an immediate danger to you and your family.

They have been shouting "capitalism is killing millions" all throughout the time that capitalism has lifted millions out of poverty and authoritarianism.

I'm maybe the only one here with the balls to state this...

But this obviously isn't the whole truth.

The difference here is: You call them "self-made" billionaires on your side of the pond

          ...

On ours, you call them "oligarchs".

But we two both know, that neither capitalism nor any "other" Jewish idea will save us.

Because the ones who scream loudest about it have grown up in lives of everyday crisis, have never known a day without a crisis on the personal front. Their parents didn't prepare them to deal with problems and never taught them personal responsibility. I say this as a Canadian centre-leftist who is sick of the people I used to consider like minded. Grow up, you little faggot cunts.

Well which is it? Do we have too much water or not enough?

The annoying thing about global warming is it increases rainfall in the already wet bits of the world, but also put's more energy into the air currents that produce deserts, so you get an increase in the range of deserts and longer periods between rainfall there too.

Why do liberals want to dilute the word crisis... i fucking hate liberals.

They're reasonably serious if you care about people dying.

          [–]Alienhunter 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

They're reasonably serious if you care about people dying.

Hundreds of thousands of people die every day. If we do nothing about the climate, more will die, society will collapse, and climate change will be abated, and deaths will balance out again. Though it will cause untold human misery and suffering.

Should we drop everything to shut down society to help mitigate climate change. Society will collapse, more people will suffer and die, and whatever government made those decisions will be ousted and a new government will come in and the pollution will start again, albeit at lower levels that before due to civilization being wrecked.

So no matter how you slice it extreme solutions are retarded, and largely end in the same place. But in the inflamed world of modern political discourse extreme solutions are the only one that take off. So you have deadlock.

Instead of having retarded climate activists disrupt people's morning commutes on the very same electric trains that have a very low carbon footprint and are far more environmentally friendly than anything else, we could have them do useful shit with their lives, like planting trees, or reconstituting their Twitter posts as fertilizer, but nooooo! We have to chain ourselves to the morning train do we. Convince the lowly office workers who don't have the luxury of driving into town with a private vehicle that maybe the private vehicle is worth it after all eh? If you lot think the planet is so overpopulated and humans are so bad for it, why don't you leave?

It's not going to be great for natural ecosystems either. Climate change won't be abated on the thousands of years timeframe.

Should we drop everything to shut down society to help mitigate climate change.

No. Just move to other, generally cheaper, and certainly more price-stable sources of energy. As a bonus you can choose ones not controlled by Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Not really mate. You just have more batteries and fewer internal combustion engines.

Geologically short timescales. I'm not claiming the effects are at all good or desirable. But it's far different from the "earth becomes the new Venus" crap you'll see a lot of stupid people push.

No. Just move to other, generally cheaper, and certainly more price-stable sources of energy. As a bonus you can choose ones not controlled by Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Yes agreed. This is the smart approach. We'd not have anywhere near the issue we have today if we had phased out coal and oil for nuclear power by now. Of course the radical environmentalist types greatly opposed that.

Sheesh! And the OP reckons the leftist say everything's a crisis!

Extreme policies create crisis. Very few people actually favor these solutions, fewer still are able to be implemented. But we have to shut down bad ideas regardless of whose side they are coming from less they simply be allowed to become policy and then we deal with the aftermath of those plus the original problem not being solved.

There's so much money tied around in green industry now that a lot of the policies proposed do little to help the environment besides funnel money around to politicians friends who benefit from the new business environment. Not at all limited to climate science, consider the companies that made a killing off of selling those backscatter x-ray machines to every airport post 9/11 despite them being of marginal usefulness, and consider how they were lobbying congress hard to mandate them at a time of "crisis".

Consider the same with COVID jabs. Forget those conspiracy theories where they say it's all population control, why the fuck would they want to kill off their customers? But are they benefiting from a government that mandates people use their product and does that open up the serious possibility of abuse? Absolutely.

How come states like California can get away with banning plastic drinking straws (something which was almost zero impact on global warming) and funneling billions of dollars in solar and wind and failed mass transit projects to help the environment all the while getting all their power from coal pumping in their water from the rivers and leaving them dry as a bone when they've got this massive fucking thing called the goddamn ocean they could be getting water from and this fun stuff called uranium that grants almost limitless very clean energy by comparison.

Oh right it's California and they can't build infrastructure for shit because they are all idiots who would rather give credit cards to homeless people rather than build high occupancy housing units to bring down the astronomical costs of rent that are keeping people homeless.

Civilization is not going to collapse from a price on carbon emissions.

          WTF?

Sunshine and wind aren't property of someone. I get that the fossil fuel industry has to accuse the renewable energy of what they're guilty of in order to create the perspective that everyone is equally evil, but think about the economics of it for a bit.

China makes a lot of PV cells and a lot of wind turbines, but they don't have a monopoly. There's pretty much free market forces in the renewables industry. No one is making a killing. It there were, someone would just undercut them.

          [–]Alienhunter 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There's big money in construction and someone has to build the turbines, after someone has to transport the materials from the factory that makes the materials from other materials that have to be mined out of the earth. We can strip mine for all the silicon and rare earth minerals needed for solar panels, but at the end of the day are we causing a net positive for the environment forcing a switch over to a power supply that won't work so well when it's cloudy and will require expensive battery technology to practically use. Or should we just use nukes? Also expensive but works way better. And less total environmental impact. Only problem is hippies don't like it, but we can simply build wind turbines in front of their protests to glean more power from their incessant babblings.

I am not university educated, in fact I have an eighth grade formal education, so my knowledge of chemistry and science is limited.

Having said that, because I have been around boats and the ocean, I am told that drinking sea water has the opposite effect that drinking fresh water will have.

They say that people that get stranded at sea will get so thirsty that they will eventually try drinking ocean water.. I am told that it makes them go insane and they will just jump out of the lifeboat and try swimming for shore, even tho they are hundreds of miles from the shore.

I know it's cliche, but Littlefinger from Game of Thrones said it best that "chaos isn't a pit, chaos is a ladder". Wherever there's a problem, there's someone who can profit from solving it, or at least appearing to do so.

The reality is that if it wasn't for the interference of people at the top who are the ones chiefly to profit from the calamities we face, almost none of them would exist, and this country would be a largely peaceful and prosperous one.
