This. The early 2000's were marred by 9/11 and the patriot act. Even if you werent American, it affected travel everywhere by everyone. Even before this everything was turning to shit anyway, the Dot com bubble burst, mainstream music was absolutely horrible (50 cent, Ja Rule, Nelly, Limp Biscuit, shitty shitty remakes).
It was also the time my favourite MMORPG was made and then died. RIP Star Wars Galaxies - An Empire Divided: 2003 - 2004.

The world seems to be getting worse every decade. The 2000s make the 2010s look like shit. And the 2010s make the 2020s look like shit, too.

I feel really bad for the kids growing up nowadays. They have no idea what it was like to be born into a healthy and functional society, and they never will. I come across Reddit posts from these 20 YO kids who have nostalgia for the early 2010s. And I'm just like, you have no idea, you poor, clueless fuck.

Society was already starting to fall apart by then, but it wasn't in the advanced state of decay that we're seeing now. From their youthful perspective, they think the early 2010s were a time to look back on with fondness. But if they had lived through the 90s and 2000s, they would know how wrong that is.

That's one thing I miss, cheap flights to the US.

The first thing I did after 9/11 was book a holiday to California. And the we got some great hotels cut price as well.

yup, pre-9.11 2001 mass hypnosis event that caused the majority to retarded

i honestly struggle with how/why people so attached to those buildings and how that event ushered in a new era of stupidity (tsa)

that event didn't cause me to get retarded, but to notice reality.. something wasn't right

it was just like now, I was looking behind the scenes and noticing inconsistencies in the official stories

The web was fun and exciting, and largely free from censorship

And people knew what the word "troll" meant.

  • the economy (in particular the cost of housing)
  • how hopeful everyone was for the future
  • flash games
  • no pandemic

The 2000's weren't great though. Music is music and I don't think there is a golden age of music. There's good stuff today and there is terrible stuff from the past. People treated each other worse in the past. I got kicked out of home as a kid for being gay in 2000, so that sucked. On the upside, housing was cheap enough I was able to pay for rent and living expenses on two minimum wage jobs and finish high school and somehow put myself through college debt-free by taking 9 years for a 4 year degree and working a lot. This is not even remotely possible now. Rent is over 10x what it was then and minimum wage has barely changed. Don't get me started on tuition, racism, homophobia, misogyny, etc. Hate crimes were a big thing at my highschool and no one cared about it.

Technology also wasn't great. We have no much instant information in our pockets now. We can share and view technology and creativity. We can also share hate a lot easier, so that's not great.

Being healthy. Raves being a recent memory rather than an old one and techno music parties still being decently fun.

Garage music culture was a bit cringy though.

Other than Twitter was irrelevant and tech companies weren't yet at war with the American people, not much. Those years generally kind of sucked.

The economy was still kind of shitty due to the dot-com bubble bursting. The biggest terrorist attack in the history of the country happened, which gave the war mongers in both parties leverage to spent $2 trillion on foreign wars (that just recently ended, thanks to Trump). And then the decade ended with the housing bubble bursting, which caused a whole new bucket of shit to hit the fan.

Only someone who was a naive young kid during the 2000s would think it was good times.

Now the 90s were great. That's when I was a kid...
