It's pretty hard to boycott an oligopoly. I find that I don't watch nearly as much tv as I used to, but that could just be a result of getting older. I find that I cringe trying to find something to watch, but when I am I don't really have any options. I guess I just have become conditioned to fill my time with that garbage and don't know what else to do. I do spend a lot more time on the internet searching for interesting shit on saidit and voat, occasionally venturing out to random websites after scrubbing through those. Mostly just looking for a conversation in the comment sections.

This is a very common problem that afflicts way too many people nowadays. I'm in the same boat. Honestly I think this phenomenon has been going on for 50+ years - ever since the invention of television, more and more people have been spending their free time sitting in front of one rather than doing something productive.

If possible, I want to encourage people to change that and get more involved in bettering themselves and their community

I didn't realize this affected so many people. I guess I kindof knew, "It can't just be me, remember if you're having a problem others probably have similar ones too," but seeing people talk about it helps me see that it is a real problem.

<3 I think a lot of people want that, a good positive uplifting productive vibe like that.

I am boycotting by default. Their writing has slumped for the most part and I see through all the propaganda now more than ever. Most period pieces are rewriting history. The sci-fi is terrible and mashed with fantasy. Too much is about authority (cops, spies, legal justice, military, etc) to ensure we all remember to comply. Even the clown cops' authority is never questioned. And with sooo much out there, it's just a mountain of shit to dig through to find a nugget of gold. Why bother.

I do YouTube and Saidit and some crafty stuff. Watching YouTube videos blasting the crappy shows is far more entertaining than the actual shows.

I've been considering if trying to start a boycott campaign against any movie/show/product that is launched in China would be a good idea. Since so many corporations are willing to bend the knee to CCP and do their propaganda biding for money, it might be a good idea to create a counter incentive to preserve the independence of the media in democratic countries.

That would be an awesome idea. Many others are saying the same, and now is the perfect time.

I don't think China is the problem. Hollywood is the problem. We would frankly be better off by embracing Chinese bullshit so they can become better at producing content and we can get some interesting shows that aren't pushing homosexuality, transgenderism, anti white racism, anti male propaganda etc. Hollywood is pushing communism anyway so its not even trading one evil for another; it is literally just reducing the amount of evil.

Making it easy to avoid sourcing from China I think would help, just clearly labeling stuff that is China-free for example, making it easy to find and source so people who want to do this don't have to go do a bunch of research and can just find what they're looking for, made someplace they want to support.

ended up long..

tl;dr: don't want to pay so use free online games/video/social media. think I should replace with family/cultural stories or educational stuff.

I can't really afford entertainment. I mean I guess I could spend money on it, but it feels extremely unwise when I don't feel super secure otherwise.

So I use what's freely available on the internet ... and I still feel bad about that because I think I should be compensating people because I think that's how things work, from the bee and the flower to human relationships with each other.

I also have always kinda disliked "TV," even growing up. "It rots your brain," idk if that's true, good stories are important, but I always had that attitude. I did watch a lot of it anyway though.

What I have ended up replacing it with is online content creators who offer their stuff for free, basically. And free video games, and anonymous social media (hi, SaidIt.). Youtube/bitchute, webcomics.

What I think I should replace it with: telling stories from my family. I think that's what TV replaced, I think back in the days of yore we were supposed to gather around the village fire in the evening and listen to the elders tell of the great deeds of our ancestors. And "gossip". Real stuff.

I'm trying to do things I think are healthier entertainment wise. I think the best thing I've found is just being outside in our garden, it's so nice just to watch all the life out there doing its thing. Like, I found out what kind of flowers our lawn grass makes the other day just wandering around in the yard.

These are some things I've been thinking are good to do, but that I'm not currently doing:

  • people keep reminding me that project gutenberg has lots of good freely available stuff. also read the founder's story, it's heartwarming and a good story in and of itself. reminds you of the best of what this information system we've got can be.

  • religious/spiritual/whatever you want to call it stuff. these things are meant to help people live good lives and provide good material for reflection and engagement that elevates life.

  • more educational stuff than TV. my family sometimes watches lectures and stuff or audiobooks instead of fiction shows.

  • math. I got an introductory abstract math book a while ago that I thought I might go through, but I haven't really gotten into it.

That said, there's some stuff I watched that I do like. I liked Frozen.

I totally agree. I think this is something we've unfortunately lost as a culture, although many people are trying to get back to it. Gardening is excellent as well, especially if you're growing things you can eat. I can also second educational and religious activities.

I'm going to think some more on this and get back to you, but feel free to speak to me more about it in the meantime. Wasting too much time on TV is definitely a problem many people struggle with

I stopped watching TV a long time ago. If I want to watch an old show, I'll find it on YouTube or something.
