Could be worth a try. We may want to build a thriving technology community before reaching out to them though.

Could work - you mean basically namedrop Saidit on Slashdot, say that it allows more freedom and has less unethical practices than reddit, and hope they come over and build a technology community here?

yes. baby steps.

i think many are aware of saidit already. all they need are small reminders

Maybe https://lobste.rs/ there's lots of redditors on there. It's tech heavy, so similar concerns to the Slashdot idea below. I try to reach out to conspiracy folks although that's not for everyone.

But rather than telling, I think showing works better. Good posts on SaidIt that get shared elsewhere will bring people by for a visit.

Good points. Lobsters may be a bit small, but it looks like a different niche so maybe Saidit and Lobsters could partner in some way. Lobsters for in-depth tech discussion, Saidit for more general chat, or something like that.

Both telling and showing are important. People will never find the site if they're not told about it, but they won't stay if they aren't shown its value.

I'm not sure how possible it is to guarantee good posts on the frontpage, but even just suggesting that people post and upvote more quality content could help. It would be great to see quality content that can appeal to new audiences, that at the same time isn't too "basic" (e.g. low-effort memes or clickbait articles).

Could you expand on this? I'm not totally sure what you mean.
